A new Submarine Availability Support Hub has been opened in Bristol, UK.

The UK Ministry of Defense announced this in a press release.

Follows the launch of the Government’s new Defence Industrial Strategy, which will ensure the defense sector is an engine for growth.

Britain’s nuclear submarine patrols will be strengthened by a new hub that brings Government and industry closer together, creating 100 new jobs and supporting apprenticeships across the UK. The Submarine Availability Support Hub (SASH) will improve submarine delivery, boost UK engineering capabilities, and help maintain the continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent.

The facility will enable the Defence Nuclear Enterprise – the partnership of organizations that operate, maintain, renew and sustain the UK’s nuclear deterrent—to work together more seamlessly with Babcock International and other contractors to drive better submarine availability and delivery.

“The investment in this new facility is another demonstration of the government’s commitment to making defence an engine for growth. This brand new facility will benefit the UK’s nuclear deterrent, which safeguards our security, and bolsters our country’s prosperity,” Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle MP, stated.

The Royal Navy Submarine Service

The Royal Navy Submarine Service currently consists of six multi-purpose nuclear-powered submarines—five Astute-class and one Trafalgar-class—and four Vanguard-class nuclear missile submarines.

However, the last Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Triumph, has already completed its last voyage and returned to the Portsmouth naval base on December 12, 2024. After the official ceremony, the ship will be sent to the submarine storage base, where work will begin on dismantling the reactor and preparing for the complete disposal of the ship.

It is to replace the Astute-class submarine HMS Agamemnon, which was launched in October 2024.

HMS Agamemnon has a displacement of 7,400 tons and a length of 97 meters. It will carry up to 38 missiles or torpedoes that can be fired from six 21-inch torpedo tubes. The arsenal includes Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles and Spearfish heavy torpedoes. Tomahawk missiles have a range of up to 1,000 km, while Spearfish torpedoes are designed to engage submarines and surface ships.

The Vanguard-class submarines are the backbone of the UK’s nuclear deterrent, with a displacement of 15,000 tons and a length of 150 meters, and can be equipped with 16 Trident II (D5) intercontinental ballistic missiles.

As a reminder, Rolls-Royce has recently signed an $11 billion deal to support the UK Navy’s nuclear submarines.
