The particles.png file from 1.9.jar with each particle's primary use explained.

The first row contains the smoke animation particles.

The second row contains the water, fish, and rain particle.

The third row contains the splash bubble and the fishing hook respectively.

The fourth row contains the flame and lava particle respectively.

The fifth row contains the note particle, crit particle, magical crit particle (magic crit shows up when you land a critical hit using an enchanted weapon), and mob damage particle respectively.

The sixth row contains the heart particle, happy villager particle, angry villager particle and a villager head particle respectively.

The seventh row contains water variants of the flame and lava particles respectively.

The eighth row contains the drip animation. (has to be textured using gray scale colors since it will show up blue when its a dripWater particle and it would show up reddish orange when its a dripLava particle.)

The ninth row contains the potion effect particle animation. It uses the textures from the right to the left in order.(has to be done in gray scale to change colors depending on the potion effect)

The tenth row contains the instant potion effect particle animation. It uses the textures from the right to the left in order.(has to be done in gray scale to change colors depending on the potion effect)

The eleventh row contains the firework spark particle animation. It uses the textures from the right to the left in order.

The twelfth row contains the end rod particle animation. It uses the textures from the right to the left in order.

The bottom contains the enchanting table letters.
