What is Mortal Shell 2?

Mortal Shell 2 is the upcoming standalone sequel to Mortal Shell, Cold Symmetry's deep action-RPG released in August 2021. The upcoming game is set in a shattered world where you play as the Harbinger, who has the ability to possess the bodies of fallen warriors and wear them as "Shells". In the trailer that was revealed during the Summer Game Fest, we got a glimpse of a new character and mysterious entities that inhabit the world. We also noted that there are at least 6 new Shells based on the background image of Mortal Shell's official website.

The setting and environment of Mortal Shell 2 feature the same aspects as the first game, where we see grotesque creatures with haunting appearances. While the full trailer only showed 120 seconds of gameplay footage, it is evident that Mortal Shell 2 has expanded on what was lacking in the first game: Weapons. We saw returning weapon types like Heavy Sword, Hammer, and Chisel, but we've also got a glimpse of the following types: Scythe, Greatsword, Greataxe, Hammer, Crossbow, and a Hand Cannon.

Mortal Shell 2 did not shy away from brutal combat and showed different kinds of finishers that Shells can do with different weapons. We also saw new enemies and familiar creatures like the Wormfish, which first appeared in the original game. Mortal Shell 2 spared a lot of details, but they revealed large enemies, presumably Bosses, that tower over the player character (Harbinger).

Mortal Shell 2: Official Gameplay Reveal Details

Recently, Cold Symmetry released the first official gameplay trailer for Mortal Shell 2. The 11 minute showcase features exclusive gameplay footage along with new details about what players can expect, like the different Shells, Weapons, Equipment, and combat system.

Confirmed Shells in Mortal Shell 2

From the official gameplay footage, three Shells have been confirmed. The heavily armored knight is Eredrim the Venerable, the horned, fully armored female warrior is Proxima the Broodseeker, and the agile, rogue-like assassin is Tiel the Acolyte.

Refined Combat System in Mortal Shell 2

One of the biggest confirmed changes in Mortal Shell 2 is the removal of the Stamina system. Without this, players are no longer limited when attacking or moving around without managing stamina. In the original game, stamina was a core resource that dictated the pace of combat. Its removal in Mortal Shell 2 will significantly speed things up and allow players to exploit tactics, which make the combat more aggressive and fluid.

๐Ÿ‘ Critical Strike Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

Mortal Shell 2 also introduces posture-breaking and critical strikes. Once an enemyโ€™s posture is broken, you can unleash a powerful critical hit that deals massive damage, or even instantly finish them off with a brutal execution.

Hardening Confirmed to Return in Mortal Shell 2

In the first Mortal Shell 2 announcement trailer, the Hardening mechanic wasn't shown, so fans were speculating whether Cold Symmetry actually removed an important aspect of what made Mortal Shell 2 unique from the other Souls-like games. But from the gameplay reveal trailer, we finally get to see Hardening in action. We see the ability being activated a few times by Eredrim while fighting enemies and briefly during the boss fight with Solnir Stillblade.

๐Ÿ‘ Hardening Ability Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

This ability allows you to temporarily turn into stone to negate all incoming damage. It is powerful, unique, requires precise timing, and has a short cooldown before it can be used again. You can activate Hardening at almost any moment, like during attack animations, dodges, after a missed parry, or even mid-air, and youโ€™ll remain frozen in place as long as the button is held or until an enemy breaks it.

Named NPCs Revealed in Mortal Shell 2

The first NPC revealed in the gameplay trailer is Vlas. Players find him sitting beside a broken-down cart, injured with an arrow in his leg. When approached, he asks the player to help find his missing cat, hinting at a side quest that players can undertake when interacting with NPCs throughout their journey.

๐Ÿ‘ Ruk NPC Revealed Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

Another NPC introduced is Ruk, shown briefly during Eredrimโ€™s gameplay segment. He mentions that he is trying to recover some eggs, noting that some are left unguarded. Shortly after, Eredrim picks up an item that reveals the locations of Beacons across the map.

Tarstones in Mortal Shell 2

From the recent gameplay trailer, a new item called Tarstones was revealed. We first see Tiel opening a chest to obtain a Serpent Stone, and inspecting the inventory shows its details. According to the description, with enough Resolve, you can infuse a weapon with Poison. The item also appears upgradable: at base level, the infusion lasts for 4 strikes, but it may become permanent once fully upgraded. Tarstones can be equipped to different weapons, though not all weapon types are compatible.

Tarstones appear to function similarly to Grease in Elden Ring, allowing you to coat a weapon to inflict its associated status effect or elemental damage.

Beacons in Mortal Shell 2

During Eredrim's gameplay segment, we'll see him pick up an item that reveals several Beacons scattered across the overworld map. After some exploration and combat, players encounter the first boss, Solnir Stillblade. Defeating the boss leads to the first Beacon, which, when interacted with, allows the player to rest, cleanse it, and return to a location called the Marrow Keep.

๐Ÿ‘ Discovered Beacon Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

Beacons appear to function similarly to Sites of Grace or Bonfires in Souls-like games. They let players rest, level up, change equipment, and fast travel. In Mortal Shell 2, it appears that fast travel to different discovered Beacons is only possible from the Marrow Keep, but we'll have to wait and see whether fast travel can be done from Beacon to Beacon.

Marrow Keep: The Central Hub in Mortal Shell 2

As seen from the gameplay trailer, Eredrim activates a Beacon after defeating the boss Solnir Stillblade, which then allows the player to travel to a location known as the Marrow Keep. This location appears to serve as the central hub of the game, where players can fast travel to discovered Beacons, level up, switch Shells, and manage their equipment. NPCs encountered throughout the journey may also appear here, offering opportunities to interact with them and learn more about the world and its lore.

The trailer also showcases a quick glimpse of the fast travel system within the Marrow Keep. Latest Information on Mortal Shell 2

Shells in Mortal Shell 2

The Shells are the classes that determine the type of abilities, skills, and other innate characteristics that are unique to that shell. Shells can be awakened and possessed by the harbinger, unlocking their strengths and unique abilities. This mechanic is similar to the first game, where the foundling can also possess the corpses of the fallen warriors. In a true, sinister, and grotesque style, the harbinger awakens the "shells" of these characters and wears them over its body. There are over 5 shells that were presented in the trailer, but only 4 of them were featured in a close-up shot.

Tiel the Acolyte

A rogue-like assassin Shell that appears to be nimble and agile in terms of movement and excels at dual-wielding weapons. He appears to have a quick, aggressive, and stealthy gameplay approach based on the recent gameplay footage.

Mortal Shell 2 Official Announcement

The Mortal Shell 2 video trailer was revealed during the Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025. It featured a 2-minute-long video highlighting features and game aspects that are both new and familiar, like the presence of the foundling-like character (replaced by the Harbinger) and the brutal combat through different weapon finishers. According to Cold Symmetry, the game developer, they said that Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel that significantly expands on the foundation laid by its predecessor. Based on what we have seen so far, we can confirm that the Shells of fallen warriors are still the main "classes" that determine their abilities, unique playstyles, and other innate characteristics.

๐Ÿ‘ Hand Cannon Guns in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

In the original game, there were 4 Shells and 1 more from the DLC, which brings the total to 5. Even then, the playstyle felt limited due to the weapon options. However, Mortal Shell 2 just showed that they have added Guns in the form of Hand Cannons that will be available in the game. In the trailer video, we saw different Shells using a hand cannon to shoot off an arm or a body part of a target. It is likely that Mortal Shell 2 will follow the same Weapons mechanic, which allows the Harbinger to use any weapon regardless of the worn Shell.

Harbinger: The New Foundling in Mortal Shell 2

Mortal Shell 2 is believed to be set in the same world as the original game, but new characters have been introduced to the world. The developers have confirmed that players will be taking the role of the Harbinger, the one prophesied to reclaim the stolen "children" of the Undermether. Just like the Foundling in the original game, the Harbinger can also possess Shells or corpses of fallen warriors. In the trailer, we will see the Harbinger reunite with a mysterious entity, which we believe to be the Undermether. A few seconds later, we will see a spirit version of the Harbinger, and they will join hands, which may signify cooperation from the two, or the spirit mirroring the actions of the physical harbinger.

๐Ÿ‘ The Harbinger in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

The Harbinger

Despite sharing the same setting as the original game, the timeline of the events remains unclear. Whether or not Mortal Shell 2 takes place after the Foundling's ascension, or if the Harbinger has any relation to the Foundling at all, is still unknown at this point. The developers did say that Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel, which may mean that the game characters could be totally unrelated.

๐Ÿ‘ Foundling Original Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

The Foundling

We also can't help but notice the similarities in the scenarios where the Harbinger and Foundling will first encounter a shell. The first image is from the trailer of Mortal Shell 2, while the second image is a scenario from the Mortal Shell gameplay. Both of these characters share a similar appearance, except the harbinger features a posture that feels far superior to the foundling. Additionally, we can see the foundling kneeling down to reach the shell, while the harbinger remains standing and looking down at the shell before it.

How Big is Mortal Shell 2?

The game will feature over 60 dungeons that can be explored by the player. Each dungeon will provide a challenge to the different abilities, talents, and arsenal of weapons that the players have acquired. It is expected that the gameplay can have nearly double the original game's size, due to the system requirements. Mortal Shell 1 only required 12GB of available space, while Mortal Shell 2 requires over 30GB of available space. From this information, we can expect that Mortal Shell 2 will have longer gameplay compared to its predecessor. However, it's also important to note that Mortal Shell 2 will use Unreal Engine 5, as opposed to the previous game's Unreal Engine 4, which may affect the total game size.

๐Ÿ‘ Village in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

Mysterious Characters in Mortal Shell 2

The characters in Mortal Shell 2 give off a haunting and eerie appearance. Many of the NPCs in the 120-second trailer gave an unsettling feeling, which dark fantasy players enjoy. There's a hostile character that seems to have the ability to suck the harbinger out of a shell when it reveals itself. This character seems to be stuck inside a cocoon, with arms, legs, and limbs shooting outwards.

๐Ÿ‘ NPCs in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

The trailer also showed other characters, like the man with an accordion and the bird that looks barely alive. The NPC on the left appears they are encountered in an area with far better lighting than the others, which could indicate that they're an ally or a friendly NPC. Meanwhile, the death bird could be an essential NPC that will guide the player, or play a role similar to The Old Prisoner in Mortal Shell.

๐Ÿ‘ NPC with Accordion Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide
๐Ÿ‘ Unnamed NPC Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

The history of the harbinger remains unknown. Similar to the foundling, the background of the harbinger is not revealed yet, except that they are given a task by the Undermether to retrieve her stolen Ova, and to slay the enemies guarding her unborn ones.

Confirmed Classes in Mortal Shell 2

Shells in Mortal Shell 2 refer to the classes, or the wearable bodies of fallen warriors, that can be found in the shattered land. These shells act like a "suit" that can be worn by the Harbinger to gain new skills, unlock different playstyles, and acquire other unique abilities, just like in the first game. Instead of the foundling, the player character will play the role of the Harbinger, who can awaken the bodies of the fallen warriors.

From the video, we have confirmed at least 4 available classes or shells. There is a barbarian-like shell where we see his scarred face, possibly from his previous battles. A knight-like shell wearing a full suit of armor, including a helmet to hide its face. A female knight-like, also with a full suit of armor, but her helmet has horns, depicting a more sinister background. Then, finally, there is a priestess-like shell wearing a full cloak that covers her entire body, with a helmet that sprawls outwards, similar to a branch, indicating a possible druidic origin. Her appearance is very similar to Sester Genessa, a character from the original game.

๐Ÿ‘ Cloaked Assassin Shell in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

These 4 are the only ones that were captured with a portrait from the trailer, but it appears that there may be another shell in the form of an assassin. There is a hooded character without a helmet and wearing only light gear, based on how much skin of the character is shown, as opposed to the other characters with full armor. Aside from these shells, the Harbinger can also be used while in Combat. There's a quick video of the harbinger fighting enemies without a shell, which is a mechanic taken from the original game. There's also a scene where the Harbinger gets "kicked out" of the equipped shell when the player's health drops to 0. They may have retained this mechanic from the previous game, where you are allowed to continue to explore and fight as the Harbinger, or to return to the shell to re-equip it.

Mortal Shell 2: Interconnected Open World

Mortal Shell 2 will feature a rewarding gameplay within a compact, interconnected open world, where wandering players will discover new encounters and story elements. This is a common experience in souls-like games, and it was made evident in the original Mortal Shell, despite having a short gameplay. As a compact game, it will probably have a similar gameplay size as the original game, which ranged about 15-25 hours, and depends on the skill of the player. The developers, Cold Symmetry, confirm that they added hidden structures for an expansive and immersive experience, and yet they made it deliberately compact to show respect to the player's time. This could mean that they added secrets and various mysteries about the game that can be discovered naturally. This could also be an attempt to separate Mortal Shell 2 from the idea that open-world gameplay is often associated with roaming in empty spaces.

๐Ÿ‘ Location with Gravestones in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide
๐Ÿ‘ Two Keep Location in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

The world and theme of Mortal Shell 2 are a true dark fantasy, just like its predecessor. The first few seconds of the trailer featured a cluster of dead trees with a group of birds (possibly a raven) swarming on top of it. The trees at first seem undisturbed and peaceful, but the presence of cocoon-like objects at the base of the tree can be found with a closer look. Ravens are also often associated with messengers of death, or a representation of an omen. This also fits the theme and the name of the new main character, who is referred to as the harbinger.

๐Ÿ‘ Dead Trees with Ravens in Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

Weapon Mechanics in Mortal Shell 2

Mortal Shell defines Weapons as tools that can be used and learned by the player, regardless of the Shell they're using. This mechanic gives players the freedom to switch shells freely, or even in the base form of the foundling. Although it is not yet confirmed, the 120-second gameplay trailer in Mortal Shell 2 showed the different shells using the same type of Hand Cannon, the latest addition to the Equipment categories in the game. This could mean that the harbinger can switch shells freely, without being restricted by its weapon choice.

๐Ÿ‘ Foundling Combat Mortal Shell 2 Wiki Guide

Mortal Shell 2 may also follow a similar progression wherein the player can upgrade their weapons and unlock weapon abilities that give them an advantage while in combat.

Mortal Shell 2 Combat System Changes: No Stamina

One of the biggest changes that is confirmed to be coming to Mortal Shell 2 is the removal of the Stamina resource. This means that player attacks and movements will no longer be restricted, and they can freely run, jump, dodge, and perform heavy and light attacks without having to watch their Stamina gauge. In the previous game, Stamina was one of the stats that players needed to manage. Now that it is removed in Mortal Shell 2, it will certainly affect the gameplay and how rapid the attacks and movements will be. There is also a mention of shattering enemy postures and critical strikes, which is a common mechanic in Souls-like games.

๐Ÿ‘ Hammer Giant Head Enemy Mortal Shell 2 Combat Wiki Guide

The trailer also shows the enemies getting staggered after getting directly hit by a hammer, their body parts breaking off from their bodies after getting shot with a hand cannon, or their shields getting broken after being shot multiple times with a crossbow firing rapidly. The combat looks very reactive from the trailer, and it already looks like it has captured the essence of a better combat since Mortal Shell's release.
