Synopsis

In a world filled with superpowered Quirk users, college student Kouichi Haimawari's dream is to become a hero just like the ones he so admires. Unfortunately for him, he finds out that there is only so much he can do with a sliding ability that gives him about as much speed as a bicycle. Thus, he is drawn to extra-legal, simpler work and takes on various local tasks beyond the grasp of the police and licensed heroes.

However, a chance encounter with two misfits, a brash brawler vigilante who goes by Knuckleduster and the online sensation Popโ˜†Step, gives Kouichi the opportunity he has always dreamed about. With a dangerous new Quirk-enhancing drug turning ordinary people into instant villains, Kouichi finds himself accompanying the two in a quest to stop the drug from spreading. As the trio tries to get to the bottom of the case, the chaotic team looks to put a stop to wrongdoers that go overlooked by the law.

This series is not My Hero Academia done right. In fact, as some negative reviews have pointed out, the connections between this spin-off and the main series are mostly superficial. However, that isnโ€™t a flaw โ€” its goal isnโ€™t to serve as a prequel, but rather to complement the original story.

How does it complement the main series?

One of the recurring messages in My Hero Academia is that civilians need heroes. Despite having Quirks, theyโ€™re often unable or unwilling to defend themselves, partly due to strict laws prohibiting them from using their powers. This mindset becomes a point of contention in the storyโ€™s universe, especially among ... the villains.

Thereโ€™s a memorable scene โ€” which I vaguely remember โ€” that illustrates this well: when the main villain, Tomura Shigaraki, threatens to carry out a massacre in a shopping mall and claims that, even if the people there had the ability to stop him, no one would dare do anything until a hero arrived. People had simply grown used to relying on heroes.

Later on, the story starts to build the idea that people should be more self-reliant and depend less on heroes. But this shift is quite abrupt โ€” a sudden change in the status quo. This is where I believe Vigilantes works as a true complement to the main narrative of My Hero Academia.

The story centers on people with less powerful Quirks who still try to protect others and themselves โ€” not as professional heroes, but as individuals who take responsibility for their community. Itโ€™s as if this series is showing that the societal shift in My Hero Academia was already happening in the background.

Ignoring this expanded universe aspect, as a standalone work, Vigilantes is average โ€” it doesnโ€™t particularly stand out in a good or bad way. The characters are likable and serve their purpose, but theyโ€™re not especially memorable. The plot is also functional and follows a familiar formula. The production is similarly average: it doesnโ€™t reach the best seasons of My Hero Academia, but itโ€™s far from the worst.

For those who have followed or are currently following My Hero Academia, this anime adds to the overall experience. For those who didnโ€™t care for the original series, itโ€™s a generic but competent battle shounen.

Mixed Feelings
The expectations I had for this were far from fulfilled.

Since it was announced at last year's Jump Festa, I've been eyeing this adaptation. Vigilantes is a story from the world of My Hero Academia that I'd never had the chance to experience, and having an anime about it made me very excited. The problem is that those expectations and expectations worked against me.

The anime isn't bad by any means; I just expected more from it. The animation is impeccable; everything you could ask for from Bones in the world of MHA is there, but with the addition of unique details that make it feel like ... a different story. The addition of Western comic-style onomatopoeia seems like a great success to me because of all the uniqueness it adds. The main characters each have their own charisma, and it's inevitable that you won't end up loving any of them. The fights, on the other hand, I think are the best part of the series. Here, the fights feel more human, more earthly. These are fights that don't depend on the Quirk of who can destroy the most cities; they're fights of endurance, creativity, and preparation. Because Quirks in the world of Vigilantes, at least in this first season, were things that help more in everyday life than in fighting crime. Therefore, if they want to fight a villain, they have to figure out how to confront him with what little they have.

What's the problem, then? The story. While we have this main plot thread of Trigger and the spontaneous villains, the protagonist never seems to advance. Koichi has no character development whatsoever throughout the season. Just as we saw at the beginning, this is how the season ends. Without any changes, and he's not the only one who suffers from this problem. It's a world that, while it has villains, here they don't pose a problem, so they're easily captured. This allows the supporting characters to pursue other activities outside of vigilantism. Then you find yourself with half a season of Slice of Life where the villain of this story is largely wasted. Watchmen is also a story that constantly tries to remind us that it belongs to the MHA universe, whether by introducing popular or well-known characters or by giving rise to characters that weren't explored in the main series. This takes away a lot of the spotlight from the main trio, because they only feel like springboards for problems that will be resolved in the main story. It's not until the end that you try to develop the villains of this story, but it's too late because there's no way to connect the villains with the watchmen. The anime's fear of both beginning and ending is too evident.

As for Knuckle Duster, I think he's a great character, and he has the best fight this season. Although his story is one we've already seen in the main series. So I don't understand what the real innovation of this spin-off was. The story came out well, but it was because it had already been told before. That's when you wonder what's so unique about this anime. If you've already seen the heroes' story, if there are no clear villains, and if the protagonist isn't relevant, then what's left that's like Vigilantes?

What a let down.

In a series that has had a serious rollercoaster in quality every season, Vigilantes is a chapter that is a low point in a completely different way than the main series.

The idea behind the show is a good one. A chance to have a hero plot like the main series, but lower stakes in small city. But instead it gets distracted constantly. The main plot was supposed to be the instant villains popping up and finding who's behind the distribution of the drug trigger, but it quickly shoved that to the side. It focused much more on the other characters and ... the little subplots they were involved with for an episode. Another issue carried over from the main show where the side characters get way too much time in the plot.

This is exacerbated by the fact that the main character basically does nothing the entire season. They throw in minor developments to how his powers could develop, but after teasing it a couple episodes it swings to the next distraction. He's constantly just being dragged around to help out various characters, but never actually seems to make an impact, or even defeat a villain in a way that feels earned. Even in the final major fight of the season he's not present, or even aware that it was going on, instead being involved with another side plot. Even Midoriya was somewhat involved with each season's major confrontations. Kouichi is basically invisible.

And perhaps most annoying of all is the frequent dropping of characters from the main series into the plot out of nowhere. It's as if they thought you would forget it was a MHA spinoff unless they added one of the teachers into an episode fighting a villain. And an origin story for why a particular character looks the way they do is hilariously added as if you need an explanation for a minor detail.

The show ends up feeling like a waste of time and neither separates it from MHA in a way that's interesting or supplements the main series in a satisfying way. It just ends up falling flat and doesn't give enough interesting directions the plot can go that can justify a person watching the second season.
