Anna Akechi is a second-year junior high student living in Makoto Mirai Town. On her 14th birthday, she has a chance encounter with a fairy named Pochitan, and a magical pendant caused her to travel back in time from 2027 to 1999! In the Makoto Mirai Town 28 years in the past, Anna meets Mikuru Kobayashi, a girl her age who wants to become a great detective.
Meanwhile, people in town are in trouble as their prized possessions are being stolen from under their noses - the cause being a group of Phantom Thieves. To stop them, Anna and Mikuru turn into Precures! Maybe if they solve these mysteries, Anna can find her way back to her own time?

Meitantei Precure "Star Detective Pretty Cure" is the newest season of the Precure franchise that began in 2004, and follows a new cast of characters, two human girls named Anna and Mikiru, human girls that become magical Pretty Cure girls, along with their two furry mascot friends, Jet Senpai and Pochita! There is also some time travel, some interesting stuff taking place in the setting of a detective agency in 1999... Okay, listen, I don't want to spoil you on all that, I feel like this is a series you really can't summarize the first episode of, or you're gonna start massively spoiling things. What
...
you need to know, is this season is very good so far!!
For me, one of the things that continues to draw me back to the Precure franchise is the talking mascot characters (referred to as Fairy partners, to the girls). The Precure series has a great track record with treating the mascot fairies as characters who are equally deserving of fair treatment and character development as the humans are. Meitantei Precure does a fantastic job holding true to this legacy, and truly that is exactly what I expect, considering the writer of Meitantei "Star Detective." You see, Meitantei is written by long time Precure Head Writer Isao Muryama. While he did not work on the Precure series at the very beginning of its history, he did become involved from a pretty early time in the 2000s and by the time of MahouTsukai "Witchy" Precure, he became Head Writer for the first time (meaning the first time he was a writer with full control over a season).
Throughout his time being Headwriter for Witchy Precure, and for Star Twinkle Precure, Muryama showcased he understood the value of these mascot characters, and he understood the heart of Precure and how it is about the bond of these girls (rather you see it as friendship, or something more!)
Ultimately I want to impart on the viewer and communicate the message that the reason for my high score, and the thing that we keep my score high as this season continues, is that they continue to write the mascot characters well. Because ultimately Precure is known for this. That is something you will see from the very beginning of the franchise, because while some reviewers will try to tell you the fairies are "just there for toys" or "just annoying" if you actually look at Precure reviews on this site that are good, stretching back to as early as 2004's Futari Wa Precure, you can see people understanding the depth of these fairy characters.
