Painted in red, the word "VON" is all that is left behind after a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility in Japan. The government is shattered by their inability to act, and the police are left frantically searching for ways to crack down the perpetrators. The public are cluelessโuntil, six months later, a strange video makes its way onto the internet. In it, two teenage boys who identify themselves only as "Sphinx" directly challenge the police, threatening to cause destruction and mayhem across Tokyo. Unable to stop the mass panic quickly spreading through the city and desperate for any leads in their investigation, the police struggle to act effectively against these terrorists, with Detective Kenjirou Shibazaki caught in the middle of it all.
Zankyou no Terror tells the story of Nine and Twelve, the two boys behind the masked figures of Sphinx. They should not exist, yet they stand strong in a world of deception and secrets while they make the city fall around them, all in the hopes of burying their own tragic truth.
[Written by MAL Rewrite] Episodes 1 and 2 were previewed at a screening in Los Angeles at Anime Expo on July 5, 2014. Regular broadcasting began on July 11, 2014.

The story was an absolute masterpiece all throughout. There are no plot holes, everything ends up having a purpose and the plot feels very realistic to the nature of the characters we get presented with. The consequences of each action meets an end very close to what would happen in the real world, and especially with the USA getting involved over nuclear technology, I think this was a close representation to the shady reality of our world politics. The corrupition and selfishness of certain military/police branches made sense too. The story also has very natural pacing, and doesn't stretch unnecessarily yet manages to tell the

whole story in great detail and make every minute important. They literally thought the plot out as far as even to the number of episodes. Everything was relevant to the story and ending.
I understand why some viewers might get annoyed with certain choices of the characters, however I think their actions were potrayed very realistic both to the personality given to each character, their age, and their circumstances, compared to what real life counterparts would do. Logically speaking, the characters didn't always stick to the most optimal solution, but on a human level I really liked to see the imperfect humanity behind the mistakes they did, and not just aura-farming edgy genious characters whose actions never deviate from ideal. It felt real.
The riddles and heists themselves were mindblowing to say the least. Each puzzle was very intricate and well written, everything was contained within one theme and made my brain actually work together with the detectives. The show did not play when they said their genre is suspense because god damn I was actually on edge many times and waited for how the police would counter each problem. There were many nerve wracking scenes.

Man, this was a struggle to get through - despite the pretty animations and genuinely beautiful music. The story keeps threatening to live up to them, but it never gets anywhere close. Roughly once every 3 episodes or so there's a moment of genuine intrigue and suspense but that's it.
9 and 12 are... Fine characters but I didn't really care too much about them. I kept rooting for Lisa and 5 to get proper development, to become less obnoxious but it never happened. The only character I genuinely really like is Shibazaki. What can I say, I'm a sucker for the middle aged wash

up detective type.
There are various completely abandoned plot points such as Lisa's unstable mother and absent father, Shibazaki's relationship to his family, Lisa's connection to 9 and 12's backstory - really, it's mostly Lisa related stuff which just makes her character even more disappointing since there was actually room for genuine improvement there.
4/10, I recommend you waste your precious time with these 11 episodes over wasting it with 12 episodes of some shitty rom-com, Isekai or harem but that's the highest praise I can give it.

Started with an interesting premise but ended up being a dissapointing train wreck. I cannot believe I slogged through 11 episodes just for Shinichiro Watanabe to say "Haha f-- you" at the end. Each episode feels like 40 minutes because of how utterly boring the dialogue was. You'd think a show about two teenagers commiting acts of terrorism would be exciting and suspenseful. Wrong. The show *wants* you to think there's suspense. But in reality, it's just a repetitive game of cat and mouse between two boys and the police. And this drags for the first four episodes or so. Every now and then, there's

a couple of moments with intrigue, but that's about it. The rest is just idle chatter and boring police dialogue. An unknown threat becomes apparent in Tokyo, the police get involved, and then the FBI gets involved. It's like watching Death Note but with less interesting characters. It's like watching The Dark Knight but Joker is a sociopathic yandere with a sparse backstory and a lackuster objective (God-knows what her purpose in this show was). Zankyou no Terror is a textbook example of how not to write a crime-thriller anime. The MCs are meh, the conversations are dull, and the plot is all over the place. Because of how unnecessarily long the prologue is, the story doesn't really start until episode five. The last four episodes felt like this rushed sequence of events that narrowly explains the motivating factors behind MCs actions. It barely explains their backstory and what exactly they were trying to accomplish. Yandere Joker felt like a throwaway villain that was inserted just to add conflict. Nine and Twelve are about as interesting as the MCs in a generic isekai anime. You have a washed-up detective type who's probably the only worthwhile character in the entire show. And for the love of God, why does Lisa need THREE EPISODES just to leave the house? This anime could have just been a 2-hour movie. But even then, I don't think a movie will save it from its own writing. Most of the entertaining parts come from the occasional bomb scenes, heist scenes, and the absolutely dogsh-t romance plotline that was barely given any screentime. It's such a waste because the anime actually has good visuals and a banger OST. Unfortunately, the story just couldn't stick the landing.
