Synopsis

Kunon Gurion is born without sight. Refusing to accept blindness as an unchangeable fate, he devotes himself to water magic. His series of personal experiments quickly reveals his talents, as Kunon's grasp of magic grows at a pace that surpasses even those tasked with teaching him.

Through constant trial and invention, he develops methods of perceiving the world that do not rely on ordinary vision, reshaping water into constructs that allow him to navigate his surroundings. His ingenuity and rapid progress soon draw attention beyond his lessons, setting him on a path of discovery that tests the very limits of possibility—as well as of his own body.

Really liked the anime, but seeing overall rating by people.. might hinder S2 and onward production that makes me sad.

The things I like are as follows:
- MC with some lacking/disease and tends to be depressed about it
-- Discovers Magic (Technology) and decides an ambition for himself that fuels life to his view of life and living standards (obv works towards it)

- Support like her "Maid" is epic, especially not only in fueling the MCs motivation but mine throughout the series
-- Good jokes and fun to watch

- Magic used is basic most of the time, but the variations keeps on and on (improvisation)
...
- Earliest Sensei devotes in curriculum creation to keep up with fast learner, she improvises and also pass on the mantle when she think she's not sufficient (yet she decides to pursue her own major to better herself)
-- MC later on regardless of how great people he meets, still recalls and respect his earliest teacher and is gratitude towards her for her improvisation and aptitude towards trying new stuffs.

Conclusion: Out of many similar troupes, felt unique and digested unique even in the same genre. Good stuffs

Mixed Feelings
"Kunon the Sorcerer Can See" is a weird anime with a lot of odd characters, a very different kind of story, and plenty of obscure moments—but does that actually make it good?

In short: it depends.
In long: it really depends on what you look for in an anime, especially whether uniqueness alone is enough to keep you interested.

Getting into it, the biggest issue is how the show handles Kunon’s blindness. After about 6 episodes, it basically stops mattering. It ends up feeling more like a cosmetic trait than an actual disability. It’s like if a paralyzed character could use magic to move again and the story ... never treats that as something with limitations or consequences. Because of that, the core premise loses its weight. His blindness barely affects him at the start, and once he starts using magic to “see,” it becomes almost completely irrelevant.

The characters don’t help much either. A lot of them are weird, but not in a way that actually makes them interesting. They have quirky traits or strange personalities, but there’s very little depth behind them. Most of them feel one-note once you get past the surface.

The ending is easily one of the weakest parts. It’s clearly meant to act as a cliffhanger for a second season, but it doesn’t feel like a proper stopping point at all. It just kind of ends wherever it can, rather than where it should. Because of that, it feels abrupt and unsatisfying, and it honestly drags down the overall experience quite a bit.

That said, the show isn’t without its positives. It’s very easy to watch, and there weren’t many episodes where I didn’t get at least some enjoyment out of it. Kunon’s “gentleman” behavior (which is basically him being a bit of a womanizer) can be pretty entertaining. It’s not something you see often, so it stands out a bit, and while the humor isn’t amazing, it’s usually good enough to land.

The story itself is also pretty creative. It doesn’t follow the usual fantasy anime formula, which helps it stand out in a crowded seasonal lineup. Even if you don’t end up liking it, at least it’s doing something different instead of blending in with everything else.

Overall, I’d say this is a solid watch for the season, but definitely not for everyone. Its uniqueness is both its biggest strength and its biggest weakness.

“Kunon the Sorcerer Can See” is what happens when incompetent writing butchers an interesting idea (this happens way too often lately).

There aren’t many shows that tire me out. This one is definitely one of them. Watching this was not only boring but also exhausting. This show doesn’t care about anything. Not the plot, not the story, not it’s own world, magic system or characters. It’s like watching someone’s loose thoughts. The problem is that those are not fever dream-like, high octane thoughts like in FLCL, no, these are the most boring thoughts one can have. Alfred Hitchcock is attributed to the quote “Movie is life, ... with all the boring parts cut out”. This show is the exact inverse of that. It’s all the fun parts cut out.

Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about “plot” and “story”. Many people use these terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page…
PLOT is the surface-level events. What, when, where, how and why (externally) things are happening.
STORY is why (internally) things are happening and what internally happens to the character during the plot.

I’ll start with this – I can’t stand Kunon. He’s probably in the TOP 5 of the most annoying, obnoxious, boring and irritating main characters I have ever seen. That’s saying something judging by what kind of shitshows I sometimes subject myself to. Not only that, he makes very little sense. In episode one it’s stated that his goal is to create new eyes for himself. Ok, that sounded awesome. An actual good idea. A blind person wants to use magic to grant himself sight. I liked it. Until I didn’t. In the same episode he gains the ability to perceive colors, shapes, read books (no, not specially written books, normal books, just ink on paper), move safely in his surroundings, practically everything that he would use eyes for. So why even bother? He didn’t want to do this because he’s curious if it’s possible. He didn’t want to create them for the benefit of others in similar situations. Not even close. He wanted to do this because he wanted to see. Well… he does. Without eyes. We don’t get one scene where his lack of traditional sight is an inconvenience to him, he can do everything, and even more, that a person with functioning eyes can. There is no real reason for him to do anything. If his goal was to be able to see… he achieved it in episode 1. It’s not like he needs eyeballs per se. He does have them. Not working as intended but they are there. It’s not like he’s obsessed with the idea anyway. He forgot about it until in episode 6 his master mentioned it. The worst offender? In episode 7 he states that he hates himself, that he can’t do anything on his own and is troubling others. We see none of that in the entire show. Well… apart from one scene in the first episode that lasts less than a minute. It’s like the writer forgot what his goal with this character was and just winged everything.
So what is the damn point? One thing. All I need is one thing he wants, or needs traditional sight, to achieve and I would be fine (not really but it wouldn’t pain me as much) with most of the other bullshit involving him.

And there is a lot, A LOT, of bullshit involving him. I’m really surprised this isn’t an isekai. This level of the whole world bending over backwards, like a cheap whore for the, is usually reserved for MCs of isekais. No matter what Kunon does, it’s seen as something unique, clever or amazing. Despite most of it being rather basic, judging but the scares laws of the world we are given. Most of those things relate to magic but it doesn’t present Kunon as smart, it shows the rest of the world as idiots. You are telling me that not one person, who uses water magic, thought of making a water bed before? Not one? Seriously? I can almost believe that people didn’t think of changing the texture of water spells because they might not notice it in such a way a blind person would, but that is still a stretch because it would imply that there are no blind mages (or maybe even people at all) in this world. Why? You created a blind character and put him in a world where disabilities don’t exist? Why? How? If there is a cure for all disabilities? If yes, why didn’t it work on Kunon? If there is no cure for disabilities then why no one who uses light magic (the only that can heal apparently) didn’t experiment with it? It strongly supports my theory that there are no disabled people, other than those born with “hero scars” (for some reason, in this world losing limbs, organs or having mental problems are hereditary). Even then, some people are born with those “scars” and not one person thought that maybe, just maybe having spells, magic tools or other means, to help them out would be a nice thing to do? Or even profitable? Those kinds of people, depending on their impairment, would be willing to spend a lot of cash… just saying. It’s not an organic world. It’s just a stage where Kunon can be amazing and think of things no one else can, even if those things would be easy to think of, even for a person with room temperature IQ.

This show uses a magic system so soft even a metric ton of viagra would do nothing to it. We don’t get any sort of explanation on how magic works, except that you need a crest for it, you are born (or not) with one and the rank of that crest determines your max mana. That’s it. Nothing more. Logically speaking people should be able to pull out new spells out of their asses on an everyday basis, but because this show was written by someone who probably never read anything good in their life, that privilege is reserved for our MC. Because of course it is. We wouldn’t want to have an interesting, organic world that makes any sort of sense. That would be silly, what do you think this is? A good show?

In the second half of the show Kunon manages to create himself a magical, artificial eye. Something he clearly doesn’t need but let’s roll with it. It works but not perfectly. He sees things other people can’t and we never get an explanation why, or even what are those things. This could have been a jumping point to a new challenge for him. Something to sink his teeth into and prove to everyone that… yeah right. If you thought that the writer has an ability to think in ways other than unfunny jokes and Gary Stu (the male Mary Sue) logic then I feel sorry for you. You clearly have taste in story telling and are stuck watching this crap.No. Kunon doesn’t bother with tweaking his spell for the rest of the show. He uses that eye and just rolls with whatever he sees, treating those things like some sort of information about people. Despite not having anything to confirm that. Those could be just hallucinations. They are probably not, judging how special and unique the writer wants Kunon to be, but I can dream that this show would get a competent writer, can’t I?

Now… let none say I only see negatives. I actually think the story idea is good. Very good even. A story about a blind kid who wants to be independent and able to make something of himself. That is a genuinely good idea. One of the best ones I saw in quite some time to be honest. It uses a character that has a significant flaw to be overcome, since the world doesn’t seem to have anything to help people who don’t have fully functioning eyes.

The problem is the plot. It’s garbage. Despite having a serious handicap we mainly see Kunon being almost perfect at everything he does. He turns out to be a gifted student of magic to the point his teacher, probably inhaling an unholy amount of ashwagandha just to be able to not panic after lessons with him, thought of herself as inept. He becomes independent from a full time caretaker moments after deciding to create himself a pair of eyes, he becomes the student of one of the most skilled mages in the region without trying and even turns most of magic school into his fans with little to no problems. Who am I kidding, there were absolutely no problems with that. He has no struggles, no real problems and no true enemies or rivals that would push him to become more than he is. It’s just so boring to watch. It’s a plot written by someone who gives off the vibe that they never had to work for anything and can’t even imagine how the fact that failure is worth much more than success when it comes to learning and development of oneself.

It’s a waste of time and energy.
Well… at least it’s not an isekai.
