First of all, I should clarify that I havenโt watched the original series. I do plan to, and my opinion might change afterward, but these are my thoughts after finishing the first season.
**Warning: possible spoilers!**
To begin with, I want to highlight the technical aspects and give credit to Sunrise for their work. While it doesnโt reach the level of studios like MAPPA or Ufotable, they still delivered a very dynamic and enjoyable experience in that regard. Both the opening and ending themes were excellent in my opinion, especially the ending. As for the overall soundtrack, itโs not particularly remarkable, but it does its job well
...
enough.
As for the story itself, it was an entertaining and fun series. While itโs not a masterpiece, it fulfills its purpose, and I was satisfied since I never felt bored while watching it.
Even though I havenโt seen the original series, I have to admit that this sequel made some fairly bold decisions regarding the original characters, especially Ryou. I can understand why longtime fans might not like this aspect, although trust me, things could have turned out much worse.
Regarding the main cast, I really enjoyed them. Their personalities may not be deeply complex, but they are well-defined. More importantly, I liked how they gradually built genuine bonds of friendship and teamwork. Gai and Ryuusei were, in my opinion, the best characters in the cast. While I would have liked Ryuusei to stay longer, it was very clear that his death was necessary to drive the development of Gai and the others.
I also really liked Shionโs addition to the team after Ryuuseiโs death. He didnโt feel like a replacement, but rather like his own character who found his place without overwriting what Ryuusei meant to the group. He integrates well with the others in his own way. Gaiโs redemption arc was also well handled. Itโs not the most complex, but it works and never feels forced, which makes his eventual sacrifice at the end of the season believable and consistent with his character.
I also appreciated that the series stayed consistent with its own rules and didnโt rely on contrived plot devices to save characters. In Mireiโs case, for example, one might expect that since sheโs the โpretty girlโ of the group, the story would pull some convenient twist to restore her after her transformation, but it doesnโt. She meets the same fate as Ryuusei, and honestly, I respect that decision.
As for the villains, Ramaga is easily the weakest character in the series. Heโs a very basic, uncharismatic villain who only stands out because of Katsuyuki Konishiโs voice acting and the fact that he possesses Ryouโs body. Aside from that, thereโs not much to him. The Ten Braves werenโt particularly threatening either. In fact, five of them are defeated far too quickly. However, they at least had more entertaining personalities than Ramaga, and it was always nice to see them in their daily lives when they werenโt fighting, which made them more endearing. Sasuke is definitely my favorite among the Ten Braves.
The weakest aspect of the series is the action. Most fights are too short and lack emotional weight. As mentioned before, half of the Ten Braves are taken out very quickly. While this is understandable given the episode count and pacing, it does hurt their effectiveness as antagonists. The best fights in the series, in my opinion, were:
- The fight against Ryuusei after his transformation, due to the emotional impact of his death on Gai and the others.
- Shion vs. Gai, as it was necessary to firmly establish Shion as a new member of the team.
- The fight against Mirei after her transformation, which also carried strong emotional weight for the protagonists.
- The fight against Byakuen, as it was important for Junโs character conflict, as well as his connection to the original series.
In the end, what kept me invested in the series until the very end were the protagonists. They are, for me, the strongest aspect of the show, especially Gai.
Personally, Iโm really looking forward to July for the second season, especially after the cliffhanger in the final episode where the Celestial Realm is revealed as the new enemy and Ryuusei appears to have been revived.
And please, pleaseโฆ I really hope Gai is alive in the second season. I know this contradicts what I said earlier about plot conveniences, but I donโt care what kind of explanation they use, just save him. My boy truly deserves to be happy with his friends!

I remember the original series from when I was a kid. I didnโt watch all of it, but I still remember some episodes and I definitely had the action figures back in the 90s. So when I heard they made a remake/sequel, I was curious because I wanted to finally understand what made this story special in the first place.
I understand why many fans of the original might not feel comfortable with this new version. The series has some very low points, but also two or three really good ones worth mentioning. The music theme throughout the series and how the characters connect through songs
...
was a really interesting idea. I also really liked the animation and the character designs.
The main problems are the pacing, the lack of proper character development and motivations, and episode resolutions that sometimes donโt make much sense. The story also feels inconsistent, and the ending feels very rushed. I feel like they could have done much more with the story and the world they had.
If they end up making a second season, I honestly donโt think Iโll watch it, because I donโt think they did a very good job with this one.

Samurai Troopers, or Ronin Warriors as it was called in America, was one of my first anime experiences as a kid who grew up in the 90's on Toonami shows. Anime lineups were DBZ, Sailor Moon, YuYu Hakusho, and Ronin Warriors. The OG Ronin Warriors left a lasting impact on me about as much as more mainstream shonen anime like DBZ. I had all the action figures, would always get hyped at the reusable armor up sequences every time, and the armor of inferno design was PEAK shonen stuff that can likely never be recreated. So when I heard there was going to be an
...
anime this season some 25 years later I was super hyped for what I had assumed was going to be a reboot and get to experience the story again with modern animation. I was SEVERELY disappointed upon finding out it was more of a continuation set in the future after the original series but I still gave it a shot. It would be an understatement to say that by episode 11 I feel as though my childhood has beaten unconscious, shat on, and left for dead. There is not enough words in the English language to properly articulate how much of a disappointment and obvious cash grab to get attention drawn to this show by playing on nostalgia. They were so close, they know what we want, they understand, yet they still chose to pull these stunts and basically take our expectations and throw them out of a vehicle moving at 70 MPH over a bridge into a ravine with a shallow river at the bottom of it. I am typically an easy to please anime viewer, I hate watch bad shows for fun, I can find the minimalist of minimal entertainment from the blandest of bland shows others wouldn't give the time of day to, but I got physically sick struggling through watching this failed abortion of a show that was shoved back into it mothers arse hole and forced to properly give birth to it and has now suffered severe birth defects and will forever be a short bus kid. The ONLY redeemable things I have to say is the opening theme is catchy and they AT LEAST brought back Ryo in the show in an interesting (but somewhat expected) twist. The show is plagued with obvious and terrible CGI that made me think the show was made back in 2010. Where in the original series the bad guys sent chills down your spine and the air was always thick with apprehension and gut wrenching fear when they were on screen but here they are nothing but jokes, overused troupes, and incredibly forgettable that I couldn't even be bothered to remember their names or what purpose they even served. Even the new protagonists who I am supposed to be rooting for suffer the exact same problem. Bland, overused troupes, and easily forgettable. I wish MAL had a 0 option because this truly deserves the absolute lowest score humanly possible to describe just how much I utterly despise this graveyard desecration. This anime left me with a worse taste in my mouth than if I had mixed Flint Michigan tap water with Budweiser in an American truck stop toilet. For the love of god if anyone involved in this project happens to read this review when the 50th anniversary comes around just do a reboot instead of tarnishing the legacy the original left...
