"Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu" AKA "How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord" is one of many among the "power fantasy isekai trend" of its time. However, unlike many of its peers, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord managed to get 2 anime seasons and a monthly manga that's still ongoing since 2015.

'Diablo' is the name of the avatar that the socially awkward main protagonist: Sakamoto Takuma (never ever used again), uses in the fantasy MMO 'Cross Reverie'. He refers to himself as the "true" Demon Lord and using the most powerful items he collected and huge knowledge of the game, ... he destroys everyone who challenges him and his dungeon.

As is tradition of various isekai, he goes to sleep and suddenly wakes up in another world. A world that seemingly matches the game with a body that looks exactly as his game character: Diablo. Pretty typical for gamer isekai protagonists, he has a hard time talking to other people without role-playing his character. Which gets him into shenanigans and misunderstandings but also lets him bluff and get around other unwanted situations as well.

He meets the other 2 heroine protagonists almost immediately as it's revealed Diablo was summoned through a summoning spell meant for summoners to obtain creatures through an enslavement ritual. The 2 heroines are: Shera Greenwood, a big-breasted, ditzy Elf and Rem Galleu, a somewhat quiet but logical catgirl. They attempted the enslavement ritual on Diablo thinking he's a uniquely powerful summon but the ritual got reflected back at them due to Diablo's magic ring. As per isekai tradition, they are now Diablo's slaves, which is mentioned a few times in the beginning but quickly gets glossed over and nothing too perverted really happens because of the slave collars or "master-slave commands".

Ok now that I got the summary out of the way... is it worth reading? Honestly, yeah. As with many monthly manga, it starts off slow as it needs to setup many of its characters, the main plot, and subplots. I even almost dropped this manga myself multiple times but I kept coming back somehow cause I wanna see what Diablo gets up to next.

Despite Diablo being your usual typical power fantasy isekai protagonist, he's not outright invincible or all that overpowered. After the usual trope of showing off how powerful the protagonist is he quickly finds "high-level" people who rivals and even matches his strength and powers who constantly put him on the ropes which he often comes out on top using a combination of tricks, bluffs, various magics, various gear, and knowledge of the video game where applicable. Diablo as a game character is at a max level of 150 and is classed as an elemental mage. However in the isekai world, there is no max level (as far as I know) and you're not limited to being locked into a single "class" which Diablo eventually puts two-and-two together which he then sets out to become even stronger than his game character (later in the story anyways).

In short, I really enjoy seeing the "overpowered" protagonist struggle in fights and having to put in considerable effort in beating his enemies.

Diablo gets caught up in the never-ending battle between "People of the races" (Humans, Elves, animal people, humanoid demons, etc.) and the Fallen (which are like a mix of monstrous beasts and demons) as the Fallen are trying to resurrect their Demon Lord. Not only that, he also gets caught up in the political struggle and conspiracies between the Church and the Kingdom and the various people who are trying to gain the upper hand against one another. It's a surprising amount of political intrigue although it's still not enough to say it's significant, just enough to keep the plot moving forward.

The art is mostly good, some weird proportions here and there but you get the gist of what's going on. There's definitely fan-service as there's a handful of ecchi scenes and scenarios but honestly the author rarely goes anywhere with it and at most it's just implied 'service' actions. If you're expecting a ton of ecchi then you'll probably be disappointed.

The only real gripes I have with this manga is the fact that it feels held back by being a monthly manga as there are some arcs and months where it drags out and would benefit from faster pacing offered by weekly releases. There's also the fact that Diablo is basically really the only one that solves everyone's problems, at least where fighting is concerned.

In terms of popularity I feel like "How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord" has already long since hit its peak (especially after the mediocre Season 2 adaptation) and will likely not garner any major attention in the near future.

Either way, here's hoping that "How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord" continues its releases and maintains a consistent fanbase.

How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, or as I like to call it, Harem King From Another World is your standard ecchi/harem isekai with an overpowered mc.

PLOT

One day the main character is suddenly summoned into a fantasy-type world as a slave to a pair of adventures. During the summoning process, something goes wrong and the roles of master and servant are reversed leaving the newly summoned protagonist with a catgirl loli and big tiddy elf as slaves. The world is extremely similar to a game the protagonist played in his world, hence when he is summoned not only does his appearance change, but ... he is also able to bring all of his items with him from within the game. (similar to overlord)

CHARACTERS

Honestly, nothing really stands out here. The characters are pretty funny and there's a lot of fanservice. Diablo, the mc, is a chicken on the inside but has to keep up the appearance of a real demon lord. While unoriginal, this led to some funny interchanges. The rest of the characters were just your average harem members, otherwise known as free fan service.

OVERALL

This show wasn't bad at all. It was pretty funny and full of ecchi. I wouldn't recommend this to people who tend to dislike the isekai/ecchi genre, but for those who do, you will definitely enjoy it.

Should I start this manga? Do you like Echii and I'm not talking soft-core stuff, there are sections of this manga that could just be classified as hentai. If you can live with that, and the story getting slower and slower then yes you should pick it up if you like Isekai with a strong harem driven, OP MC.

-Moderate Spoilers- (If you don't want a quick plot overview skip down to the pros and cons)

The story hits it off with MC-kun being Summoned to another world by two adventurers who wished for a powerful familiar but in-fact had the spell reversed on them making them ... MC-kuns "slaves". We're only a the start and its already saucy!

From here MC-kun strives to be an adventurer and get favor in the land. Good the objective has been set, and on-top of that it's not a hard one. These come to fruition and the slightly harder and harder challengers come up to contest MC-kuns ownership over his "slaves".

After some time the kingdom is in need of assistance against other races and MC-kun is required to give assistance. From here on the story isn't bad, nor is it overly good, but if you like the easy on the eyes echii and OP MC-kun then you might just get a kick outta it

-----------------------------------------------

Pros:
Slaves
Echii
Interesting start prospect
Nekos

Cons:
Too much Echii (For me to enjoy it, the "plot" needs just as much story impact as the actual plot does, if the "plot" is just a cover for a poorly written story then its not worth my time)
Slow story progression

Will I continue to read it?
No,though I don't have a lot to say about the overall manga itself, the story just ended up lacking that finesse that originally struck me when i read the first couple chapters, its originality went out the window and the excess "plot" without having enough actual plot just made it seem like poorly written hentai.
