Started watching anime as a 'more mature' person. Realised they're not just kid's cartoons after watching Grave of the Fireflies. (Still haven't recovered). Have since watched a wide range to better understand what I find enjoyable. Still learning how to be more picky... trying not to judge myself for questionable choices.
For me, mandatories are: an engaging story, characters I can feel empathy with and a touch of magic... whatever that may look like. Have found that its best to keep an open mind and a sense of humour. Avoid reviews, avoid over-hyped anime. Take risks. Sometimes they pan out, sometimes not... the genre is a wild ride. Why is Chinese dongua is not more popular? We're accepting of 3D in video games after all. They have a wider range of historical stories full of fantasy, and some of the most tragic I've experienced. I endure the jank translations, love their excessively flowery language and laugh at their sometimes blunt idiosyncrasies. Have now acclimatised to reading manga/manhua. Wish I'd been exposed to other cultures when younger. The world is bigger than we think. Currently trying to work thru my PTW list... but there's always side quests. Favourite movie: Howl's Moving Castle Favourite anime series: Fruits Basket Favourite donghua: Xian Ni (Renegade Immortal) Favourite manga: (tie between) Mashiro no Oto -and- Yubisaki to Renren Favourite manhua: Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing) Anime is addictive and Spirited Away was my gateway drug. |
