I believe its worth reading and prefer the manga. The first season covers the first 65-70 chapters. The story pacing in the manga is a lot better since they don't have to rush it. The overall picture was captured very well by the anime. So I would only go back and read the manga if you want to see more character development, world building, and small details. If you are planning on continuing the series you should know that season 2 of the anime is drastically different from the manga and went down a different path.
I found I enjoyed how the characters developed, and how they dealt with their situation. Unlike many other shows with similar plots the main characters didn't just become the best or completely embrace this new world. There are some twists in the story that really made me want to finish it. Also the inner dialog was the last thing that sold me, it was well done in my opinion. There were some bits I didn't enjoy but the experience on a whole won me over and in the end I found I had enjoyed the journey and wanted it to keep going so I could see just were they would end up.

I saw your review about Berserk, the last ep of the anime. I was like you until I read the Manga its a real masterpiece! you should give it a chance, you wouldn't regret any moment you spent with this manga/anime. I highly recommended it to you.
