I bet you would like Shinsekai Yori and Madoka with all the themes you keep pointing out.
The exploration of the first season in MiA reminded me of the feeling of the first few seasons of Attack on Titan, with all the mysteries and adventures outside the wall.

What other shows does Penkin compose for? I've been listening more to Yugo Kanno (Jojo, Psycho-Pass) and Yuuki Hayashi (BNHA, Wistoria, Haikyuu)
Oh gosh I'm so sorry you have gone through something that makes MiA relatable, but it's good that it helped you process those events. It's so funny... or not funny... it's interesting how different people pull different things from the same show. You can never tell what shows will impact you until you watch it, and it's so hard to find it again when you do find something. Like how I like the theme of time travel, but not every time travel anime. Or it's like how when Attack on Titan got popular and a bunch of shows came out trying to copy it but the vibes were never quite the same..
OH I wonder if you would like Kemono Friends...
I always thought the drawing of the map of the Abyss looked like a creature with its mouth open at the bottom. Like the tube at the bottom looks like a throat, too. It almost looks like the Crimson Splitjaw with the feathers "ontop" or the right side of the map. Do you see it? I see it... It makes feel like the Abyss is even more alive than we can imagine.

Ouzen is so cool, dude. Way too cool. If I met her I would probably pee my pants in awe. She's like 9 feet tall, too. I would break my neck looking at her and say thank you for your time. Something MiA does well is it has a world with depth. Like the characters aren't just there to exist for and help the main characters. Ouzen clearly has a history and that influences her decisions. The world building is super well done.
What?? Less gore than Cyberpunk?? You don't remember in season 2 when they made a small child give birth to a bunch of babies and then ate them????? And that small pink creature pooping on a relic and then getting squished by Maaa???????? And the toilet that licks butts????????????? And how in the final few episodes Faputa kept dying over and over and over and OVER AND OVER IN THE MOST GRUESOME WAYS POSSIBLE?????????!!!!??!?!?!?!?!!! The whole season felt like gratuitous torture and suffering to me, when I was more interested in the mystery of the Abyss and wanted more exploration rather than them being stuck in one place for a cours.

Cyberpunk
There is some gore in Cyberpunk, but it's so bright and colourful and fun that it's more like "wahoo blood but look at David's yellow jacket wowie! popping colours!! Is that surgery for another spinal implant? Whoa look at Rebecca's... everything!! Cool!"
I loved David and Lucy. They were so tragic. The ending scene with Lucy on the moon made me think a lot too. About how when people you love do self-destructive things that only push you away, so you have to make a decision to move on and just remember the times you had with them. Wow, typing that out was kind of cathartic...

In the final episode, Rebecca's death surprised me so much with how fast it happened and how the camera didn't linger on her body. I was like "wait no is she okay??? where did she go?? SHE WAS SQUISHED???? NOW SHE'S EVEN SMALLER THAN BEFORE!!!!!!!"

I watched all of MiA, even the Marulk special. I really liked the first season with its exploration theme, but after that it fell off for me. And the second season... got a little too gory for my taste. The music, though, across the entire series was amazing, especially Rebirth:


I like the mystery around Riko's mom and Nanachi is super cool.

Cyberpunk, on the other hand, I loved all of it, and gave it a solid 10. I love David and Lucy so much, and I am so excited for a second season!! I wonder where on the timeline it will take place! Before the series? After, during the game somehow? Or during the timeskip of the show? I hope it comes out in 2026!! I can't wait to watch it.

Over the years, I have watched Made in Abyss and Cyberpunk, too! I remember you loved the former, and I see the latter in your favourites now.
