Nothing much. How have you been? I've mostly been rewatching shit this year, so I haven't kept up with any seasonals. Overall, I've had to cut down on anime a bit this year due to work. I still enjoy it though.

For both the Right and segments of the Left, immigration is overall not popular with the American people. I think close to 60% more or less approve of Trump’s immigration policies. This is understandable. Immigrants will work for cheaper. This drives down the price of certain jobs. Immigrants often take a while to learn English, which creates frustration and miscommunication. Many immigrants are here illegally, which means they aren’t paying income tax. This doesn’t really matter in my state where sales tax is everything, because our illegals have to pay that anytime they buy anything. We don’t even have income tax and our property tax is low. However, millions of illegals not paying their income taxes helped bankrupt California. Rapid, illegal immigration has also created a shortage of apartments and helped fuel the rent/ cost of living crisis, which is one reason California has SO many homeless people.

At the same time, America’s robust immigration has given us a younger population than our developed peers, which is a good thing economically. We don’t have the crippling stagnation worries of Japan and China. There are also plenty of jobs that need to get done, Americans don’t want to do them, and until we get AI robots, someone has to do them. I have a highly eccentric acquaintance from high school who embraces all things “blue collar” to spite the ever loving fuck out of his snobby medical doctor father, whom he hates passionately. He works the graveyard shift at FedEx lifting heavy crates off a belt and loading them on to trucks. Just destroying his back lifting heavy boxes, walking to the truck and slamming em down for 60 hours a week. Midnight to 11 AM with a 1 hour break from Monday to Saturday. His only co-workers are illegals and meth heads. It pays 24 dollars an hour and offers 60 hours a week and Americans would rather work retail jobs and get paid 12 an hour and live at home than do that shit.

Personally, I think we should increase our legal immigration quota for Latin America. That way we get less illegal immigration, they pay taxes, we know who and where they are. Mass deportation is expensive as fuck, then even if we kicked out every single illegal immigrant, they’ll just come back and we have to do it again. If a lot of those guys are going to be here anyways, I say let them be here legally. Then if anyone gets criminal charge in their first 10 years, instant deportation. It’s a lot more manageable if we’re deporting thousands and not millions. As for sanctuary cities, this gets into federal power vs local power. If legal, American citizens vote that they want their city to be a sanctuary city, that’s their choice. There will always be choices that others make that you personally don’t like, but you deal with it if you want to keep living there. If you can’t deal with it, just move somewhere else. I didn’t vote to ban pornhub and think it’s Evangelical overreach, but it’s the law now and I deal with it.

Trump said he’d start his second term at a sprint and he certainly has. He’s made a lot of very bold choices and I think we’ll have to wait and see what their longterm impact will be. So far, the government is 40,000 employees fewer, now giving America one of the smallest governments for a developed country relative to size. Some of those jobs were probably pointless pencil pushers and they won’t be missed. Some of them may have been important and we’ll be in for a headache down the road. A company gets away with something they wouldn’t have if the SEC hadn’t been gutted. A new medication makes it to market that’s actually dangerous and wouldn’t have made it if the FDA hadn’t been gutted. Or maybe nothing bad will happen and corporations really are responsible enough actors by themselves. We won’t know though in a couple weeks or even months. I think it will take years to fully understand the pros and cons of the current cuts.

As for cabinet members, some of them are pretty expected. Tulsi Gabbard is an unusual choice to lead the CIA, but I don’t think she’ll be the worst in history. There have been some shitty CIA directors. Kennedy is easily my least favorite pick. I think he’s an idiot who is always ready to doubt whatever doctors say and push some wacky new age healing technique in place of vaccines and modern Western medicine. I’m amazed that Musk doesn’t get PTSD listening to his rambles as a South African. Back when Thabo Mbeki was in charge of South Africa, his health minister educated everyone that HIV doesn’t cause AIDS, so people with HIV shouldn’t have any restrictions on donating blood or who they have sex with. AIDS can be cured by drinking enough vitamin C, and if nothing else works, having sex with a virgin is a guaranteed cure. This policy directly resulted in South Africa’s life expectancy in the 2000s dropping to 37 and it created an epidemic of baby rape. Desperately sick men with AIDS started raping toddlers and infants because surely they must be virgins right? Therefore, it will cure AIDS because the health minister said so! While I don’t think Kennedy can do anything THAT bad, I do fear that measles and mumps are going to make a roaring comeback and at least some children will die completely pointless deaths from Oregon Trail diseases.

Mexico and Canada's currencies both plummeted in 2024 and will likely continue to through 2025. Whether or not Mexico can actually meet Trump's demands to stop the flow of immigration and drugs remains to be seen. That would be nice.

As for USAID, it's a government program. So of course there's going to be wasteful spending. Some of the work that USAID does for fighting disease, starvation, and providing vital infrastructure to the poorest countries is important and, in my opinion, should be kept. USAID has been critical in fighting the spread of HIV and keeping the death toll down on a global scale. On the other hand, some projects they've funded are far less practical. Also, the poorest countries are often the most corrupt, which increases the chances that the money spent there will be misappropriated by local officials.

If DOGE wants to go after government waste, look no further than the Department of Defense. They have an annual budget of 800 billion, over 10 times that of USAID and never come anywhere close to passing their audits. Russia has less than 1/10th of our military budget and they built hypersonic missiles before we did. Their SLBMs and ICBMS are all brand new, whereas ours are old as shit. Their army are horribly trained conscripts, and their pilots don't get the amount of flight hours to be able to use squadron tactics, so in reality their army isn't exactly as strong as it seems on paper. However, the fact they DO have newer and objectively better missiles and air defense systems than we do should be embarrassing. We have dozens of expensive bases around the world that we don't really need. Our aircraft carrier fleet is hilariously expensive and not all that useful against a peer power since China's missiles outrange the planes that our carriers can launch, so we can't get close enough to use them. We've given billions of dollars to Islamist terrorists and other questionable forces. We wasted millions in the 1970s and 80s trying to train psychics to kill people with their mind powers. We know this, because that shit was declassified in the 90s for us all to laugh at. The Department of Defense is the absolute KING of wasteful spending.

That makes sense. I actually burned out on anime back in 2007 and watched only 5-6 new series between 2007 and 2014 when I joined MAL. I was living alone in a new state at that time and got very lonely, so it was fun to talk to people online.

Politics are always exciting. The sea of politics is eternally chaotic. The Trump administration is making good with its campaign promises so far, but things are never so simple. Tariffs of course met with retaliatory tariffs, so the tariffs have been delayed by a month. Personally, I think Trump could learn a lesson from Milei. Tariffs tend to lead to more tariffs which just leads to reduced trade and higher consumer prices.

Americaid has been temporarily suspended, but who knows how exactly that will go. It may end up being absorbed by the State Department since actually eliminating it fully would require an act of Congress, and I don't know that bill could get through the House and the Senate. Cutting off foreign aid is actually quite popular with the American people. The majority of Americans don't want billions of American dollars going to shithole countries on the other side of the planet when parts of America are poor and suffering. However, the political class and foreign policy experts have widely supported this aid since the early 1960s. Firstly, foreign aid can greatly benefit a country's soft power. When the Soviets gave away Smallpox vaccines for free and helped eradicate smallpox, they gained eternal allies throughout the developing world. Countries that will never stop trading with Russia, never place sanctions on Russia, and will never stop giving them mining contracts. They will never condemn Russia at the UN regardless of anything they do, because they're the heroes who cured smallpox. One reason the US has been very adamant about giving HIV vaccines to Africa (upon which 27 million people currently owe their lives to) actually dates back to the Cold War. The Soviets spread a rumor that the CIA created HIV in a lab to punish black people for having too many kids and annihilate Africa's population. While this isn't true, the rumor was widely believed in Africa and America's public image in Africa plummeted. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region on the planet that is still growing rapidly in population and has an absolutely absurd level of mineral resources. From a global strategy viewpoint, the big powers want sub-Saharan Africa to like them. Even though those guys are really poor, the region is vitally important. Secondly, it benefits the developed world if the developing world is at least doing kind of ok. They don't have to be precisely as rich as Europe and America, but if those societies collapse, people don't just lay down and die. They're all coming here. Nobody in Venezuela actually wants to learn English, trust their life to a coyote, travel thousands of miles from home and leave everything behind. They do it because Venezuela is such a fucking shithole that they have no choice. If Venezuela was only kind of a shithole, they would all stay in Venezuela. It's the same with Mexico, Haiti, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, etc. The only long-term way to reduce immigration is to make less places of the world absolutely unliveable shitholes.
