Native Plant Garden Tour: A SoCal Tradition in Bloom

Since 2004, the Theodore Payne Foundation Annual Native Plant Garden Tour has been a celebration of creativity, community, and the power of California native plants. This two-day, self-guided tour showcases inspiring landscapes across Greater Los Angeles, offering a unique look into how native plants can transform gardens, neighborhoods, and lives.

The Garden Tour features a diverse range of public and private spaces—from coastal container gardens to urban homesteads, lush pollinator havens to hillside restorations. Each garden is a living example of what’s possible when beauty meets ecological purpose. All featured gardens include at least 50% California native plants and reflect a range of styles, sizes, and site conditions.

Open Call for Artists 🎨

Theodore Payne Foundation is excited to seek out a SoCal artist for our next Garden Tour Guidebook. The selected artist will create an original work for the cover of the guidebook, which also be featured on our annual Garden Tour merch and in our spring marketing.

Selected artist will work closely with our team on a commission of unique artwork based on the theme of the 2027 Tour (TBA). This is a paid opportunity, with large public exposure in the Southern California environmental community.  If selected, please expect to start working collaboratively with our team in July & August of 2026 with an early-September 2026 delivery of final artwork.

Could it be you? If interested, please submit your art/illustration portfolio at the button below to be considered for this exciting commission!

Deadline: June 30th, 2026

Garden Tour '26:
Habitats That Heal

We are excited to unveil the theme for next year’s Native Plant Garden Tour — Habitats That Heal. The 2026 Tour will be a celebration of the restorative power of native plants for ecosystems, wildlife, and our own well-being.

We’re honored to feature artwork by Carly Lake, whose cover illustration captures the spirit of the tour and the ways that California native gardens nurture, restore, and connect us to the land. Mark your calendars for April 11-12, 2026!

Featured Gardens

We are excited to spotlight four gardens that represent resilience, community, and invaluable native habitat. They are exemplars of the Theodore Payne Foundation’s mission to inspire Angelinos with the beauty and ecological benefits of native plant landscapes, from coast to crest.
