The US government has confirmed that a fighter jet was shot down over Iran and one of two crew members has been rescued by US special forces, according to several reports.
The news portal Axios, citing an Israeli official and a second source familiar with the situation, said the search for the jet's second crew member was ongoing.
Broadcaster CBS News also reported on the rescue of a crew member, citing two US officials.
The reports of the rescue came after the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Gard Corps said the armed forces shot down an F-35 fighter jet in central airspace using a new advanced defence system.
However, US media said the incident involved a 15E aircraft.
Earlier, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that a US pilot had ejected and been captured. But state radio said the fate of the two US pilots was unclear.
The F-35 jet, manufactured by the US company Lockheed Martin, is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.
