In Serbian folklore and ballads, villas are mountain-nymphs, young and beautiful and clad in white. Their voice is said to resemble that of a woodpecker. They shoot deadly arrows at men, and occasionally carry off children whom their mothers in their anger have consigned to them or to the Devil. However, the general character is not to injure except those who intrude upon their dances.
