State of Play: Phantom Blade Zero Creative Director Announces Delay

Creative Director for Phantom Blade Zero, Soulframe, announced that the release date for the game has been pushed back by 50 days, updating the final release date to October 29, 2026. The new release date was confirmed in the Letter from the game's Creative Director that was shared on the game's Steam page, following the State of Play special teaser trailer. The letter details sincere apologies from the Creative Director and their decision to move the final release date from its initial launch date of September 9, 2026. According to Soulframe, they understand the expectations that have been placed by the fans awaiting the game, and knowing that they still have an opportunity to improve the game is the exact reason for the delay.

Soulframe went on to discuss the developments that they've worked on for Phantom Blade Zero, starting from its first reveal in 2023, to an offline hands-on demo event in 2024, to the Seven-Star Sword Formation, Lion Dance, and Drunken Sword showcased in 2025, detailing how much the game has grown over the years. As the game's development reaches its release stage, Soulframe said they focused their efforts on "polishing the areas that matter most", and this is where they discovered "one final opportunity" to make Phantom Blade Zero even better.

Some of the changes that they've worked on in the past months included upgrading a number of character models and reworking environments across the game. He also explained that they're doing upgrades without relying on ray tracing to make sure that the game's core look, atmosphere, and intensity of the game will be felt and experienced by as many players as possible, and enjoyed on day 1. To the developers' credit, they believed that these updates could have been delivered through post-launch updates, but they wanted players to experience the best version of the game on its initial release, and believes that "every extra day of waiting will be worth it".

Phantom Blade Zero Combat Overview

Phantom Blade Zero features a fast-paced, fluid combat system centered around melee combat and combo-driven gameplay. Instead of encouraging a slow and methodical approach, the game rewards players for chaining their attacks together into stylish combinations. Its combat blends weapon mastery, Kung Fu techniques, and fantasy elements, allowing players to unleash flashy combos that resemble choreographed action sequences seen in classic Hong Kong martial arts films.

The game also features a flexible loadout system, allowing players to equip multiple weapons and seamlessly switch between them during combat without interrupting the flow of combat. Each weapon type comes with distinct properties, strengths, and attack patterns, giving players options to adapt to different combat situations. Whether facing aggressive enemies up close or dealing with multiple opponents at once, switching weapons mid-combo creates a dynamic combat experience.

Beyond the offensive mechanics of Phantom Blade Zero, it also places heavy importance on defensive gameplay. Players can perform backsteps, dodge rolls, blocks, or parry incoming attacks, with successful defensive actions giving players an opportunity to perform devastating combos on enemies. Each defensive option excels in different scenarios. For example, Brutal Moves, indicated by a blue flash, should be parried instead of blocked, as successful parries avoid resource consumption while building the enemy's Poise Break meter and triggering Ghostep. Meanwhile, Killer Moves, marked with a red flash, should be avoided by precise dodges, which also triggers Ghostep when timed correctly.

Many offensive and defensive actions consume a resource known as Sha-Chi, which functions similarly to stamina systems in other action RPG games. Powerful weapon combos often require Sha-Chi to execute, while defensive maneuvers such as blocking and dodging also consume the resource. Because of this, mastering parries becomes highly rewarding, as successful parries do not consume Sha-Chi while also putting enemies in a vulnerable state. The balance between aggression, defense, and resource management creates a combat system that is both stylish and mechanically rewarding.

Phantom Blade Zero Story Progression and Exploration

Based on the previous playtests, Phantom Blade Zero appears to feature a mostly linear story structure while still giving players the freedom to explore its environments. Instead of a fully open world, the game adopts a semi-open world design that creates narrative progression with optional exploration, allowing players to discover hidden paths and additional encounters throughout each area.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

The game also features a checkpoint system similar to the bonfire mechanics fond in many action RPGs. These checkpoints allow players to save their progress, recover before difficult encounters, and fast travel between previously activated locations. This system encourages exploration while also reducing travel time if players need to backtrack repeatedly.

Exploration in Phantom Blade Zero is enhanced through a variety of traversal mechanics that make movement around locations feel fluid. Players can run along specific walls to cross gaps and reach elevated areas, while chains and ropes can be used to swing across obstacles or inaccessible locations. These mechanics add verticality to exploration and help make the environment feel more dynamic.

These traversal mechanics is also closely integrated into combat and stealth gameplay. Players can seamlessly transition from movement into combat as they ambush enemies during the movement sequences, such as attacking while leaping from ropes or wall-running into opponents. Enemies who are unaware of the player can also be taken down with stealth kills, rewarding careful positioning if players want to approach the game stealthily. This combination of mobility, stealth, and fast-paced combat help create a smooth exploration experience throughout Phantom Blade Zero.

The game's emphasis on fluid movement, stylish combos, and challenging boss fights gives players a combat system that rewards both aggression and precision, while mixing in defensive options for balance.

Phantom Blade Zero Gameplay Mechanics and Features

Weapon Switching in Phantom Blade Zero

Weapon switching in Phantom Blade Zero is a core combat mechanic that allows players to have loadouts to equip two main weapons and two side weapons simultaneously, creating a seamless and dynamic combat experience. Instead of being locked into a single weapon type during encounters, players can instantly switch between weapons in the middle of combat without interrupting the flow of the battle.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

This system rewards adaptability, as each weapon type comes with their own strengths and combat properties. Players can quickly swap to the weapon best suited for a specific situation, whether it involves dealing with aggressive opponents at close range, or controlling mobs of enemies. Swapping weapons mid-combo will also allow players to extend them and create stylish transitions, giving access to a wider variety of offensive options.

Checkpoint Mechanic in Phantom Blade Zero

Phantom Blade Zero features a checkpoint system that allows players to recover, save their progress, and fast-travel between previously discovered and activated checkpoints, similar to the bonfires in Dark Souls or the Sites of Grace in Elden Ring. These checkpoints serve as safe locations where players can prepare before continuing their journey in dangerous areas.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

This checkpoint system also encourages exploration by making backtracking convenient. Players can freely revisit previously explored locations to search for hidden paths, missed items, or optional encounters without needing to manually traverse the whole way. By reducing the friction of exploration, the checkpoint mechanic helps players who take their time to thoroughly explore the Phantom World.

Boss Encounters in Phantom Blade Zero

In Phantom Blade Zero, players will encounter a variety of powerful bosses, some of whom were once allies of Soul. These encounters help expand the game's mysterious lore and deepen the story surround The Order and the Phantom World. Unlike regular enemies encountered throughout each location, bosses are major combat challenges that feature unique mechanics and attack patterns. Boss fights are distinguished by the health bar displayed at the top of the HUD. Most bosses focus on melee combat, encouraging players to utilize the game's defensive mechanics such as dodging and parrinyg. These encounters are designed to complement the flashy and cinematic combat system of the game, rewarding players who can balance defense with combo attacks.

During Gamescom in 2025, players were able to face two notable bosses. The first was Wan Jun "Coppermaul," a gigantic humanoid boss wielding a massive sledgehammer. Another boss shown was the Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars, who fights alongside multiple minions that constantly pressure the player from all directions. When Wan Jun was defeated, it dropped the weapon it was wielding, which was the Bashpole. This system rewards players for defeating bosses, giving them powerful weapons as they progress through the game.

Weapon Types in Phantom Blade Zero

During the playtest for Phantom Blade Zero, several weapon types were revealed, showcasing the game's variety in terms of combat styles and offensive options. Players were able to wield dual blade-style weapons, flexible whip-like Soft Snake Sword, and heavier two-handed weapons such as greatswords. Each weapon type features its own unique moveset, attack speed, range, and other combat properties, giving players different approaches to combat depending on the situation.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

These weapons are designed to excel in different combat scenarios. Faster weapons can pressure single targets and extend combos with quick attacks, while larger weapons are capable of dealing heavy damage and defeating enemies with powerful strikes. Other weapon types can specialize in crowd control by performing wide-sweeping attacks that can hit multiple enemies at once, making them effective during encounters against mobs. The game also includes ranged options, such as bows, allowing players to attack enemies from a distance or weaken opponents before approaching them for close-quarters combat.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

As previously mentioned, Phantom Blade Zero allows players to seamlessly switch between equipped weapons during combat. This system encourages players to combine contrasting weapon types to create a more flexible fighting style. For example, players can use a fast weapon to maintain combo pressure before switching to a heavier weapon for dealing with mobs. This freedom in weapon switching gives combat an additional depth and allows players to adapt to different enemies and combat situations.

Character Progression in Phantom Blade Zero

In Phantom Blade Zero, character progression is closely tied to exploration, encouraging players to search each area for hidden collectibles and upgrade materials. Instead of relying on a traditional leveling system with stat allocation, progression appears to focus more on enhancing resources such as Health and Sha-Chi through special fragments discovered throughout the world. By collecting enough of these fragments, players can permanently increase their health or Sha-Chi gauge capacity. This system rewards exploration while giving players gradual power growth as they progress through the game. One example shown during the playtest was the Amber Chip, a collectible that increases the player's Sha-Chi gauge by 30% after gathering four fragments.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

During the playtest, weapons appeared to be the primary form of character customization, as there were no armor sets or additional equipment shown aside from the weapon loadouts. This suggests that player progression will rely on combat mastery, weapon selection, and exploration-based upgrades instead of gear optimization. As players advance through the game, they will get stronger and more specialized weapons, allowing them to shape their playstyle around the weapons they prefer the most.

Difficulty Settings in Phantom Blade Zero

Near the beginning of Phantom Blade Zero, players will be able to choose from two difficulty settings: Wayfarer and Gamechanger. These options are designed to accommodate different skill levels and playstyles, allowing both newbies and experienced action game players to enjoy the game at their preferred level of challenge.

👁 Homepage Phantom Blade Zero Wiki Guide

Wayfarer serves as the more accessible difficulty, giving players an opportunity to learn the game's mechanics without being overwhelmed by unforgiving enemies. Gamechanger, in contrast, offers a more standard and demanding experience intended for players who are familiar with fast-paced action games. The third difficulty, Hellwalker, serves as the game's extreme mode and can only be unlocked after completing the game once on Gamechanger difficulty. This significantly increases the challenge, making enemies tougher while also introducing new attack patterns. As the enemies behave differently, this variation helps give Phantom Blade Zero strong replayability for players seeking a challenge.
