Abstract

Isolation and loneliness affect approximately one in five older adults in developed countries. It is a risk factor for premature mortality. Animal-assisted therapy, whether informal or professional, gives meaning to daily life, promotes social connection, and encourages physical activity among older adults. This article provides a brief review of the literature on its implications.
