Description

Super RMN Land
A brand new RMN Mario game!

Hey its been a while! Who wants to make some levels?
Anyone on the site can join! Whether you have prior experience or not!
Okay cool! But what is this exactly?!

The seventh RMN Mario game made in SMBX2 hosted this time by Lonestarluigi!

For this event I don't wanna exactly aim to top Yoshi's Archipelago but instead make a smaller game that seeks to get the creative spirit going again! (And give everyone a chance to test the waters with SMBX2)

The Story!
The weirdo and highly neurotic Mr.L is upset the last RMN World game (Yoshi's Archipelago) was a great game! He bets Mario and the gang they can't be in a game made with the shiny new SMBX2 engine and have it be any good!
SO LETS SHOW HIM WHOS BOSS

1. What you will need!
  • SMBX2 Engine
  • You can use any graphics and music you want! Be sure to put them in the folder with the same name as your level.

2. LEVEL SUBMITING RULES
  • *Levels must be made in SMBX2
  • * No levels from past events or projects.
  • *You can only submit 5 levels!
  • *Levels must end with the SMB3 star.
  • *You are allowed to have 1 additional hidden star in your any of your levels (Must be SMW Star)
  • *The only characters I want to focus on for this project are Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, Link and Wario.
  • *If anyone makes any Wario levels be sure to make them only for Wario, his moveset and playstyle differs from the others and can lead to some levels that can't be beat without him.
  • *SMBX2 has a Lakitu Shop NPC in the misc. NPC section, he is going to be available in the main hub area of the game he is not allowed in any of the levels! He sells powerups and I think would be a good reason for players to go coin collecting, but you still have to put power ups in your levels!
  • *This will be a single player game only this go around, I feel like this would allow us to be more creative and not having to worry about designing around two player support.
  • *If you make a boss fight in your level make it fair! I will judge whether or not it needs tweaks.
  • *NEW* Please add 5 dragon coins in your levels, they will be turned into RMN coins in the final game"
  • *NEW* No secret or alternate exits your level must only end with the SMB3 star (^Isrieri brought this one to my attention)

Timeline
You will have 1 month to make levels and submit them!

Levels will be critiqued and must be approved before they make it into the game! There will be a period of time after the submission deadline is over where we will work on revisions

Really this is about it for major rules, there are no themes make any level with any theme you have in mind.

Guidelines
While I want to see what cool and whacky new levels we make this go around I still want to enforce some general guidelines!

Don't mix different art styles. Example: Don't make a SMW themed level then use SMB3 or SMB1 blocks and enemies

Using custom graphics from graphics packs may be fun but still try to keep it with the first guideline and keep your levels cohesive!

Make sure your mushrooms don't go off screen we want our players to be able to collect them!

Refrain from unwinnable situations and don't have levels that players must glitch to win.
Example: Crouching under 1 block high sections causes Mario to zip across the screen and this can lead to a lot of messy situations.

Conclusion
This may be a smaller event but I still want to make a fun game that anyone can enjoy! So I will be fair and critique accordingly, my word is final on if levels are approved!

Have fun and go make some levels! I also highly encourage everyone else play each others levels and provide feedback as well!

This is a community event aimed to just have a good time!

Anything goes! But I will organize the levels by difficulty in the final game.
I wanted the idea for this game to be a fun experiment with SMBX2 and just let anyone make whatever they wanted too.

*Edit* Within the guidelines of course

That's fine, I was just wondering if we were actually gonna commit to a Sarasaland theme. I think I'm going to in anything I make.

I kinda like the idea of Sarasaland themeing, but first I should try this new fangled SMBX2 and get a feel for making Mario levels again. Gotta see what actually changed in everything, and see if I can actually make Mario stages instead of stuff that'd feel more at home in DKC or something.

(actually maybe I'll go play Mario Land, that's only an hour long game anyways and gotta get the head in the mario space)

I do actually have one idea for a Sarasaland level myself, I'm starting to think maybe I should have made this a Sarasaland themed event.

I think it'll be fine. Let the creativity flow, and if the submitted levels fit the shoe, then the final game can fit that theme! Plus if it'll be Sarasaland themed, gotta find assets for that too! And there's no All Stars version of that. (unless they're also in SMBX2, I haven't tried it yet)

It's not too late! Although the idea of replacing assets might be a challenge for newer users. It's taken me a couple hours of experimenting to remember how to do it myself.

I think it'll depend on how many people end up participating and what they want to make. Committing to X number of lands with Y numbers of levels seems contrary to the very free-form nature of this project but maybe there'd be enough interest.

There are some SML enemies in SMBX2, and a lot of graphics packs I've found have Mario Land assets in the SNES style so I do have a back up just in case. But I'll prob stick to the free form thing I've got going now.

Wow, this is great! I've never done anything like this, so this'll be a challenge XD Time to study up on the formulas people usually use!

If you're looking to do homework before making your first level I'd recommend playing or watching videos of Super Mario bros 3. (Or maybe Super Mario Land.)

Stupid question, did I even have to sign up for my own event? I felt like it would be easier to share my levels that way lol.

I have a few guideline suggestions based on past experiences:

  • If you are going to allow hidden stars I strongly recommend making that into a requirement. Trust me when I say its going to be a pain if some stages have secrets and other stages don't.
  • If people make a boss stage, there should be a mandatory checkpoint right before it. SMBX2 lets us have multiple checkpoints now so lets be generous with them. You're the project lead so I say that you reserve yourself the right to drop a checkpoint in any stage you think needs one.
  • I'm all for allowing people to use custom assets, but certain things should look the same in each stage - hidden stars and the end goal for one, checkpoints for another. I would personally want to keep powerups looking the same too but that's up to you.
  • You want the SMB3 star to be the end goal of each stage and that's good. But do you also want that black curtain that is supposed to go with it? Should the end goal be completely clear of enemies or puzzles? Stuff like that is good to decide now before people start making things.
  • You didn't say anything about secret exits. Alternate end goals in other words. I imagine you probably don't want those but you need to spell that out in the rules if not.
  • You'll probably want to tell everyone how to structure their level folders just to make life easier on yourself when you have to put everything together.

I'll sign up to keep an eye on what you guys make, but I dunno if I have it in me to make a stage. We'll see.

I dug up some old code for you guys if you'd like to try them out in a test level.
Each one has a basic description of what it does at the top of the file.

https://rpgmaker.net/users/Isrieri/locker/simple_scripts.zip

To use these scripts in your level, you need to create a level folder with the same name. The new editor will prompt you for this whenever you first save the file. Then, you just extract the .zip into the level folder and they will work. Give yourself a Fire Flower and see what happens.

I wrote these a long time ago, and they were meant to be used in a global folder that affects all the levels in a game instead of sticking copies in individual stages. Ideally that's how they ought to be used, if you guys like them.

Sorry friends, I have zero time available to make a stage for this.

But I could do playtesting in video format, so that's probably the most I can offer to this event.

By the way; movement in SMBX2 isn't bad. It's f*cking awful. So I fixed it.

Open notepad, put this in it.

-- This makes the character move like an actual Mario game
-- Put this at the very top of your luna.lua, NOT inside onTick
player.acceleration = 0.25 -- Default is lower, making it slow to start
player.friction = 0.25 -- Default is about 0.06, making it slippery

Save it as luna.lua and put it in your level folder.

You're welcome.

Edit: Well, shit. Just copy paste. I don't know why it put white letters on a white background.
