Systemic inflammatory syndrome in COVID-19–SISCoV study: systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: BACKGROUND: There has been a recent upsurge in the cases of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with Coronavirus disease . We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the demographic profile, clinical characteristics, complications, management, and prognosis of this emerging novel entity. METHODS: Using a predefined search strategy incorporating MeSH terms and keywords, all known literature databases were searched up till 10th July 2020. The review was done in accordance … Show more

β€œβ€¦The most observed comorbidities were obesity and/or overweight, chronic respiratory diseases, onco-hematological diseases, and neurological disorders ( 64 ). This finding confirms previous reports showing that MIS-C predominantly affects healthy individuals ( 44 , 49 , 51 , 52 ). In most reviews, MIS-C diagnosis was made by serology in 60% to almost 90% of cases, while direct diagnostic methods such as PCR for SARS-CoV-2, were positive in swabs in less than of 40% of cases, similar to our findings.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

β€œβ€¦In line with previously conducted systematic reviews, our study shows an approximate 3:2 ratio between male and female patients, and among comorbidities, obesity was the most common comorbid condition 153–157. A disparity was noted among data for race/ethnicity as our findings report that the Caucasian population represented the highest proportion of MIS-C cases (30%).…”

β€œβ€¦In terms of clinical presentation, our results highlight the similarities and differences between MIS-C and KD described in prior reviews. The median age of our patients at 7.5 years is on the lower end of the reported range (7.3-10.8 years old) for MIS-C, [20][21][22][23] but older compared to the reported range for KD, which predominantly affects children aged <5 years. 3 The male predominance (66.67%) noted in our series has also been previously reported.…”

β€œβ€¦33 The use of anakinra is recommended by ACR in cases with refractory MIS-C despite IVIg and steroids. 30 Such cases are less common [21][22][23]27 with only 1 case in our series requiring this. Variations in treatment highlight the ongoing uncertainty about the ideal treatment strategy for MIS-C given the spectrum of severity.…”
