Kismet is a console (ncurses) based 802.11 layer-2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. It identifies networks by passively sniffing (as opposed to more active tools such as NetStumbler), and can even decloak hidden (non-beaconing) networks if they are in use. It can automatically detect network IP blocks by sniffing TCP, UDP, ARP, and DHCP packets, log traffic in Wireshark/tcpdump compatible format, and even plot detected networks and estimated ranges on downloaded maps. Awesome *UPDATED program and development community. Check out https://www.kismetwireless.net/ for some of the other projects and information/docs regarding the newest release of Kismet. Kismet is currently still in active development and is in turn getting better and better as time goes on. Gem of a program. Incredibly versatile and competent all around, anyone who fancies themselves information on random/obscure/unknown wireless networks, this is for you. Also has the ability to map networks to a map with the help of a GPS unit. Seriously Mike is amazing, and the work he does is absolutely incredible. He is hard on himself, as it shows and then subsequently pays off in the code that he writes and maintains. Huge supporter here. Try it yourself!

It's awesome. I did war-walking/driving all day with some of my students and the results were staggering. Along with a few other binaries, Kismet can do wonders with WiFi hotspots when it comes to vulnerability testing,privilege escalation and more...GR8 Job
