North American Cultural Areas

The Indigenous peoples of the North American Southwest are Native American tribes with similar cultures in the southwestern United States and parts of northern Mexico.

This region includes the present-day states of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada. Other names for this region are "American Southwest", "Northern Mexico", "Chichimeca", and "Oasisamerica/Aridoamerica".

These areas are usually dry with little rain. However, the grounds are rich and allow for agriculture. The landscape includes plains, valleys, mountains, desert lands, canyons and grasslands.

Major people groups include the Puebloans and the Southern Athabaskan language group (which includes the Navajo and Apache).
