About Joe Kunzler
Journalist - When not reading and writing about aviation, Joe photographs aviation. Joe loves educating the public about aviation and generating enthusiasm around flying while supporting all those who work in aviation.
Based in Skagit County, United States
What is your favourite aircraft and why?
I'd have to say the Boeing EA-18G Growler because it's the only home-based aircraft with an afterburner. Also, my first aviation journalism story in 2002 was as a student journalist reporting on the EA-18G Growler coming to NAS Whidbey.
But my favorite pilot flew the F-35A you see here. Maj. Beo bent the weather for me and some of her other superfans and put out the flares!
What is your industry focus?
I cover a lot in aviation, but I like to cover these subjects as of 12/2024:
*Military: I like high performance aircraft, and I support our troops. I also want to focus on the kit inside the high-performance aircraft when I can.
*Drones: I really feel drones are what's next. Am also learning to operate a DJI Mini 3 drone so I can understand this industry better.
*Seattle-Tacoma International Airport & Alaska Airlines: My hometown international airport and my home state-headquartered world's best airline... because of the people.
Why do you love aviation?
Two reasons:
1) I don't like being chained to a desk or a small town. When I feel the Gs of take-off it's the most freeing feeling out there. Being able to see the Earth from the sky is also a privlege and an honor.
2) I like that I have found we in aviation all committed to community, improvement, inclusion, and most of all safety regardless of age, disability, gender and such petty differences no matter our line of work - whether that's cabin crew, pilot, mechanic, or in my case jounalist/scribe. We love our field and we are in an arguably mutual admiration society. Other fields, like public transit, could learn from us.
