There are just three powers in the strategic strike arena. Today, the only countries in the world with operational bomber fleets are China (People’s Republic of China, or PRC), the United States, and Russia. Only the United States has any fifth-generation systems among the three. One of the most valuable and significant strategic assets in the whole US military is the small fleet of 19 Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirits. Although there are currently no documented PLAAF flying wing stealth bombers, recent social media leaks have shown pixelated pictures of what appear to be such aircraft in flight.

In this comparison, the United States does not lead in total, but it is the only country has a fifth-generation platform in its inventory. The Russian air force, even during the height of the Soviet Union, never constructed a jet-powered platform that could match the formidable B-52 Stratofortress, let alone the B-2 Spirit. After over a century of service, the "BUFF" is still uncontested.

The turboprop Tupolev Tu-95 Bear and the jet-engine X'ian H-6 are the main platforms of the Chinese and Russian bomber fleets, respectively. Similar to the 👁 Image

(previously Rockwell) B-1B Lancer, the Russian strategic air forces can claim the supersonic Tu-22M Backfire and Tu-160 Blackjack. However, as the invasion of Ukraine destroys those supersonic aircraft, their numbers are steadily declining, and Tupolev finds it difficult to produce more as well as keep the active fleet in good shape.

China, Russia, and the US all fly strategic bombers, but they have quite different design concepts. Whereas Russia places more emphasis on speed and mobility in its earlier aircraft, the US prioritizes stealth and cutting-edge technologies. In addition to updating its existing bombers, China is creating new, perhaps stealthy aircraft. The US prioritizes long-range precision attack capabilities, stealth, and cutting-edge technology, and its important aircraft include the B-2 Spirit, B-52 Stratofortress, and B-21 Raider.

Russia is solely focused on sustaining its existing fleet while slowly adding as many of the long-range, supersonic models as it can produce. China's bomber force is being updated with new, perhaps stealthy designs, but until that happens the current inventory is desperately out dated. The H-6 (Badger), a licensed variant of the Soviet Tu-16 from the 1950s. The H-20 is a novel, stealthy flying-wing bomber that follows the B-2 and B-21 design with the capacity to launch both conventional and nuclear strikes. In the table below is the latest update for 2025 bomber fleets from World Population Review.

Russia, China, and the United States also have different nuclear arsenals and doctrines. Russia has the largest total arsenal, with over 5,500 warheads, while the United States has nearly as many at around 5,200. China's arsenal is smaller, with an estimated 600 warheads. All three of the nuclear-armed power have strategic delivery systems with diverse options including land-based missile systems, submarines, and heavy bombers.

China's strategic bomber fleet primarily relies on the H-6, which is a modernized version of the Soviet Tu-16. The family of variants includes H-6K, H-6J, and H-6N. The H-6K is the main long-range strike and nuclear platform. The H-6N can refuel in-flight and deploy air-launched ballistic missiles. The H-6J is a specialized model for maritime strike missions. China is potentially a new stealth bomber, the H-20, which would significantly enhance its strategic strike capabilities if it materializes.

The H-20 is expected to have a flying wing design similar to the American B-2, with a longer range and greater payload capacity than the H-6. The other speculative future platform is the J-36, a medium-range stealth bomber, which has been seen in social media posts from mainland China. China's strategic bombers play a crucial role in projecting power and deterring potential adversaries, particularly the US Navy carrier strike groups.

China and Russia have also conducted joint strategic air patrols, with both Chinese and Russian bombers participating. These patrols have been observed in the Pacific region, near Japan and Alaska, and triggered intercepts by both US and Canadian fighter jets. The purpose of these patrols is to show strength and close defense ties between the two countries, and can be interpreted as a message to other nations in the region.

The Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) is the modern-day bomber command, and a key component of the US Air Force. It is responsible for providing combat-ready forces for nuclear deterrence and global strike operations. It ensures the safety and security of the nation by sustaining and improving a credible and effective nuclear deterrent force as well as a conventional global strike force.

The US Air Force has a bomber fleet consisting of three main platforms: the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, and B-1 Lancer, along with the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit. All of these bombers offer strategic strike capabilities for both conventional and nuclear roles, carrying large payloads anywhere in the world. The B-21 Raider, a next-generation stealth bomber, is being developed to replace the B-1 and complement the B-2 and B-52 until they are finally retired.

The B-52 Stratofortress is a long-serving, robust bomber capable of carrying an unmatched variety of munitions. The B-1 Lancer is a supersonic, swing-wing designed for low-level penetration, carrying the largest conventional payload in the Air Force inventory. The B-2 Spirit is a stealth bomber optimized for precision strikes with minimal detection, and penetrating the most advanced defenses.

Major General Joseph Campo, US Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Director of Operations, Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration - commented on the following the February, 2025, deployment of B-52s to Europe:

“Bomber Task Force missions reinforce our ability to rapidly project combat power, demonstrating U.S. lethality and readiness in a dynamic security environment. Training alongside our Allies and partners ensures seamless integration, enhancing our collective deterrence and warfighting capability across Europe and Africa.”

AFGSC maintains and operates the nation's intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) as well as the strategic bomber force. The unit also oversees the Air Force's nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3) systems. It provides operational and maintenance support to ensure its forces are ready for deployment and employment. AFGSC's strategic priorities are maintaining a safe, secure, and effective nuclear force, deterring aggression, and reassuring allies.

The Russian bomber fleet, is composed of the Tu-160 Blackjack, Tu-95 Bear, and Tu-22M3 Backfire aircraft. The platforms, however, are aging and facing challenges due to limited aerospace production capacity. The Tu-160 Blackjack is currently Russia's most capable strategic bomber, capable of carrying large cruise missiles or bombs. The turboprop Tu-95 Bear is a long-range strategic bomber known for its endurance and ability to launch cruise missiles.

The Tu-22M3 Backfire is a supersonic, medium-range bomber used for long-range strikes. Russia is working to modernize its fleet, including the Tu-160, with new production and upgrades. The fleet's strategic role is considered a crucial strategic element for the country's nuclear deterrent and conventional strike missions.

Russian bomber patrols have increased in frequency and proximity to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries' borders since 2007. Often viewed as aggressive due to numerous close encounters during interceptions by NATO aircraft. These patrols often occur near NATO borders, such as the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and North Atlantic. Reports indicate that Russian aircraft intentionally turn off transponders or use radar to "paint" targets during these patrols, a tactic not typically seen in peace-time operations by Western nations.

The Arctic, such as the borders of Alaska and Canada, is generally considered less hostile than other regions. NATO has responded to these patrols with increased interceptions, as numbers have been significantly higher in recent years compared to the early 2010s. Russia claims these patrols are routine training exercises, while NATO and some analysts view them as a demonstration of Russian military power and pressure on the alliance.

Russia’s Bombers In The Invasion Of Ukraine

Russian Air Force strategic bombers have been used to launch ballistic and cruise missiles from Russian airspace to hit targets across Ukraine, causing wide-scale damage and casualties. Ukraine has struck back, with the most recent attack on the bomber fleet just last week. Drones launched by Kyiv hit five Russian aircraft at an airfield in Crimea, destroying at least one and damaging two others, according to Newsweek.

New satellite images were published by the BBC in June that show serious damage inflicted on aircraft at several Russian airbases during Ukraine's surprise drone strike earlier that month. The images of two Russian airbases in north-western and central Russia show 12 aircraft damaged or destroyed. The attack on the airfield in Saky in occupied Crimea also hit an ammunition storage depot, according to Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).

Ukraine claims that it targeted 41 strategic bombers in the operation, adding that "at least" 13 were destroyed. Security officials say the shock incursion took 18 months to plan and saw many drones smuggled into Russia. Drones conducted attacks on Olenya, Ivanovo, Dyagilevo and Belaya airbases. Manufacturing of both the Tu-95 and Tu-22 ended at the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, which will make repair difficult and replacement near impossible.
