The Longitude, Cessna- Textron Aviation's flagship super-midsize jet, easily dominates its class thanks to its two roomy cabin zones, whisper-quiet interiors, and nonstop flights up to 3,500 nautical miles—imagine a trip from New York to London with plenty of legroom. Since there is a high demand and only 3% of the current fleet is available, if you’re in the market and you find one up for grabs, you should act fast.
Yet, it's not just the upfront price tag turning heads. Annual operating costs hover at just under $1.8 million, making ownership a commitment that's as much about passion as it is practicality. Welcome aboard, buckle up, and check your wallet.
Performance By The Numbers
The Honeywell HTF7700L turbofans and 28.6-degree swept wing were used to balance speed, range, and payload. The aircraft has a maximum cruise of 483 KTAS at Mach 0.84, meeting scheduled airline block times. The advertised range is 3,500 NM, during long-range cruising at Mach 0.79, and 14,500 lb (6,577 kg) of fuel provides endurance of more than seven hours.
The reported fuel burn of around 316 gallons per hour from Guardian Jet results in direct operating expenses of about $4,342 USD in the Citation Longitude. Take a look below at the comparison between the real-world Longitude and the could-have-been Hemisphere specs:

The Longitude Development Story
The Citation Longitude was announced at the May 2012 European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE). The first flight-test aircraft completed its first flight in October 2016, and the third in March 2017. The fourth prototype joined the flight-test program in May 2017, and the first production unit was rolled out on June 13, 2017.
The Longitude was granted a provisional FAA-type certification in December 2018, following 4,050 hours of 1,650 test flights. The FAA issued Type Certification in September 2019 after a global tour of 31,000 NM (57,000 km), including 11,000 test points, and 6,000 flying hours.
In July 2021, Textron Aviation declared the Citation Longitude's EASA certification. The current retail price for a brand-new Longitude starts at around $29 million USD. To date, the major buyer remains NetJets, and the jet has proven itself to be a reliable, efficient, and comfortable plane that makes fliers, pilots, and owners equally happy with its performance across the board.
Lessons Learned From the Hemisphere
In 2019, Cessna was fully occupied with three concurrent new aircraft programs: the Longitude business jet, the Cessna Denali single-engine turboprop, and the Cessna SkyCourier package-carrying twin, which FedEx and other companies have chosen. As the Forbes report commented, at a time when business jet sales were slow, it might not be so bad not to have the distraction of another brand-new program.
AIN Online quoted Richard Aboulafia, vice president of analysis at the Teal Group:
“Hemisphere always seemed a bit of a leap for Cessna, in terms of resources and market position, particularly given their relatively weak sales base since the 2009 downturn. It's particularly hard to make the jump to the top half of the market, where only Bombardier, Gulfstream, and Dassault play.”
However, the investment in the Citation family has continued to pay dividends for Cessna as its partnership with NetJets clearly illustrates. The classic, world-renowned aircraft maker is an icon of the aviation world for more reasons than simply brand recognition. The Citation jet family is growing steadily and continues to uphold the reputation for quality that the Cessna name represents.
Engineering Choices And Market Forces
The Longitude is a successor to the canceled Cessna Citation Columbus, with a fuselage cross-section similar to the Cessna Citation Latitude. The aircraft has a T-tail empennage and area rule fuselage contouring, with aluminum wings and moderate winglets. The Latitude fuselage has been reinforced and stretched to accommodate eight people in a double club. The wings and empennage are similar to the Hawker 4000, with winglets leading to a larger wingspan.
The Honeywell HTF7700L maintains second-segment ascent with eight passengers from Telluride's 9,078-foot height while providing 7,665 lbf (34.10 kN) flat-rated thrust to ISA+19 °C. GarminG5000 autothrottles and digital engine control work together smoothly to save pilot burden during climb-cruise transitions. The trailing link main landing gear improves access to regional airstrips by absorbing impacts from uneven surfaces.

Three current models are offered, and many more variants have been produced in the past.
Why Cabin Volume Matters
Fractional provider NetJets values those attributes because it schedules multiple short sectors daily. Each cabin segment houses robust side USB and AC power, allowing customers to charge laptops continuously—an important feature for business travelers. The bag bay’s 112 cu ft (3.17 cu m) volume fits skis or golf clubs without impinging on cabin luggage, a difference customers can appreciate on leisure itineraries or even combined work/play trips.
Cabin width of 77 in (1.96 m) supports club‑four seating ahead of an optional divan, so eight travelers enjoy individual workspaces while two cabin attendants operate a full‑length wet galley. The stand‑up environment also decreases disembarkation time, translating into quicker turns at congested business terminals such as Teterboro or London Luton.
Gonzalo Mendoza, Textron Aviation’s chief acoustics engineer, said:
“Often, aircraft are designed to be quiet mainly during long range cruise. The Longitude is very quiet there, but it's also quiet during climb, high speed flight and descent. It was made to be quiet from the the outset, not modified to be quieter after it was designed.”
Executives may have meetings or sleep without headphones thanks to noise suppression that reduces noise levels to about 67 dB during cruises, which results in noticeable benefits during nighttime legs. Charter brokers' brand image and in-flight ergonomics are improved by the flat-floor aisle, which allows staff to roll service carts rather than stooping under the dropped-aisle humps found on previous Citations.

Operational And Sustainable Economics
Market asking prices in April 2025 sit between $20.995 million and $26 million USD, while the guide from Guardian Jet pegs a typical sale at $23.497 million. Only about three percent of the 144‑strong fleet is on the market, signaling tight supply and firm residuals for an aircraft still in production that began in 2019.
Annual fixed overhead is estimated at $484,599 USD for an annual 300-hour flying schedule. Approximately $325,000 for a two-pilot crew, $68,800 for hangar fees, $70,000 for combined hull and liability insurance, and $20,500 for sundries. Variable costs could reach $1.303 million, driven chiefly by fuel and scheduled maintenance, adding the two produces a $1.787 million yearly bill. These figures place the Longitude comfortably below large cabin competitors yet above light jet economics, matching its super‑midsize categorization.
Guardian Jet estimates 316 US‑gallons of Jet‑A burned per flight hour, so at $5.00 per gallon, this equates to $1,984. Next up is $1,120 for hourly maintenance costs, $578 for engine reserves toward a 6,000‑hour overhaul (quoted at roughly $4.6 million for the pair), and $660 for miscellaneous costs. The result is an all‑in direct cost of $4,342.48 per hour, a figure that is similar to estimates for the Challenger 350 and lower than larger Gulfstream models.

Fleet Adoption And Expansion
NetJets and Textron made a significant announcement at the 2018 NBAA Convention and Exhibition (NBAA-BACE). The two businesses agreed to buy up to 150 big cabin Cessna Citation Hemispheres and up to 175 super-midsize Cessna Citation Longitudes. Since 1984, NetJets has operated about 500 Cessna Citations, including the Citation Latitude, Sovereign, Excel/XLS, and X.
Sherpa Report quoted Scott Donnelly, Chairman and CEO of Textron, saying:
“The Longitude fleet will build on the success NetJets has enjoyed with the Citation Latitude midsize jet. Through its class-leading performance, operating efficiency and the quietest cabin experience in its category, the Citation Longitude redefines the super-midsize segment. The Citation Hemisphere will follow with its revolutionary approach to performance and the large cabin experience.”
Unfortunately, the Hemisphere never manifested to fulfill NetJets's order. However, the partnership with Cessna was not hindered by the aborted model rollout. Instead, NetJets continued to grow its fleet of Citation family jets, and in 2023, they even agreed to a 15-year long-term arrangement to procure as many as 1,500 Cessna Citation jets, as reported by Flight Global.

Trajectory For Citation Jets
Engineers at Textron are researching a "Longitude Plus" variant that would increase range to 3,800 NM and add 1,200 lb of fuel while maintaining runway numbers through aerodynamic adjustments. With modest development expenditure and structural changes, certification is reportedly targeted for 2027.
Sustainability pressures may accelerate development, with sustainable aviation fuel blends testing by up to 50%. Electric taxi systems and carbon credit programs could improve operating economics. Longitude’s next evolution may very well be the game-changing model that the Hemisphere promised to be, but until then, we will have to wait and see.
