United States low-cost carriers operate some of the youngest fleets in the industry. With the aim to minimize operating costs while staying competitive, these airlines invest in modern fuel-efficient aircraft that offer higher performance, greater reliability, and lower costs for the airline. Major low-cost carriers in the US, including Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Breeze Airways, operate competitive fleets with new-generation aircraft. This article compares the three budget airlines and their aircraft types.

Spirit Airlines

  • Airbus A320-200s: 63 aircraft (average age of 10.5 years)
  • Airbus A320neos: 91 aircraft (average age of 3.8 years)
  • Airbus A321-200s: 29 aircraft (average age of 8.2 years)
  • Airbus A321neos: 30 aircraft (average age of 0.9 years)

Spirit Airlines operates the youngest fleet in the current lot, having an average age of 5.9 years across its aircraft. The sole operator of Airbus A320 family narrowbody aircraft, Spirit has 213 jets in its fleet. Data from ch-aviation suggests that the airline currently has 160 active aircraft across its A320 family. The total (active and inactive) fleet comprises 63 Airbus A320-200s, 91 A320neos, 29 A321-200s, and 30 A321neos.

The newest in the lot is the A321neos, with the carrier’s first aircraft, registration N702NK, delivered in May 2023. That aircraft will soon be celebrating its two-year anniversary with the airline. The latest example of the type, registration N745NK, was delivered a little over a month ago in February. The airline enjoys an impressive 0.9-year average age across its A321neo fleet.

Spirit Airlines: What Happens Now?

So Spirit Airlines has emerged from its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, and its executives are saying all the right things about it being "a stronger company positioned for long-term success". It has managed to restructure around $795 million of debt, and received a $350 million equity investment from investors to support its customer experience initiatives. But is this enough? Will Spirit be able to find success in an evolving market for low-cost carriers, and if so, what do you think it needs to do / change to reach that success? Or will it end up returning to bankruptcy proceedings and potentially even be shut down and sold for parts?

Spirit Airlines' A321neo fleet has 235 seats, including eight “Go Big” seats in a 2-2 configuration, 12 “Go Comfy” seats in a 3-3 configuration with blocked middle seats, and 215 standard economy seats.
