There are many reasons why any organization, whether a private individual, a corporation, or a sports team, may choose private aviation as the long-term solution to its air transit challenges. Private planes offer passengers exceptional speed and travel efficiency. They do not have to wait for hours at the airport in security lines, boarding lines, or lines to check bags. When a group values speed and convenience above everything else, there are few better options than flying private.

There are some downsides when it comes to operating private planes, with the largest and most obvious being the higher costs associated with operating these kinds of aircraft. For starters, chartering a private jetor private turboprop aircraft, even for a simple event like a sports game, can be prohibitively expensive, and it can only be justified if the need for efficient and reliable transportation is simply too large. In certain extreme circumstances, organizations may even justify owning and operating their own private jets, to ensure that they have complete control over the transportation process.

Sports teams are some of the organizations with the most strict expectations for travel. A team that has a huge game simply cannot arrive late, regardless of the circumstances. While we at Simple Flying have extensively discussed how certain professional sports teams (mostly the New England Patriots) have chosen to maintain private aircraft for transportation, several colleges also charter dedicated aircraft or outright own private jets. Primarily, the aircraft are used by college sports teams, which have similar travel requirements to professional sports organizations.

How To Book Affordable Seats On Private Jets

Private jet flying experience is similar to flying First class in US domestic commercial flights.

In the world of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals involving college athletes, the entire world of recruiting (especially for college football and college basketball) has changed dramatically. As a result, private planes can become crucial recruiting tools for these sports organizations. Let's take a deeper look at five U.S. colleges that own private aircraft or charter dedicated custom planes and examine the purpose they serve.

1 University of Colorado, Boulder

Alongside a new head coach, the school has flown in a new private jet

Since Deion Sanders arrived in Boulder and turned a losing team into a championship contender, the university's football team has never been the same. Nothing different can be said about how the Buffaloes get to and from their games. Back in December, Coach Sanders and the Buffaloes made quite a statement when flying to the Alamo Bowl against Brigham Young University (BYU) in a custom Boeing 777-200.

The aircraft, which was chartered and customized for the team, featured a unique Colorado Buffaloes-themed livery and Rolls-Royce engines, all while maintaining the team's official emblem on the tail, according to reports from Sports Illustrated. The aircraft was a modified ex-Delta Air Lines jet and offered both business class and economy class seating. More senior players, like star quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman winner Travis Hunter, were offered premium seats.

The team made quite a statement while flying to its first bowl game in years, and the first under the leadership of Deion Sanders. The aircraft was so popular with the team that Sanders even joked he would book the team on Southwest Airlines in the event they were not performing well. We will surely hope to see this custom chartered aircraft again in the future.

Some sources have incorrectly claimed that the Colorado Buffaloes custom-built aircraft is a "Rolls-Royce" aircraft. Rolls-Royce only manufactured the aircraft's engines.

2 University of Alabama

The university operates a Cessna Sovereign jet

The University of Alabama's athletic department has been known to use a private Cessna Citation Sovereign business jet on occasion to support its athletic recruitment programs. The jet itself, which was built in 2011, is officially owned by the Crimson Tide Foundation, an educational non-profit organization that funds the university's athletic initiatives. The foundation is also responsible for upgrading and maintaining the university's athletic infrastructure.

The aircraft in question is based out of Tuscaloosa Regional Airport (TCL), a major airport near the university. The aircraft allows Alabama coaches to travel across the country and recruit the best talent as efficiently as possible. The aircraft is one of the best-performing business jets in the skies. Here are some of the aircraft's specifications:

Cessna Sovereign specification:

Maximum range:

3,200 nautical miles

Cruising speed:

530 miles per hour

Service ceiling:

47,000 feet

3 University of Kansas

The university's private jet primarily supports its basketball program

The University of Kansas, which was founded in 1865, has been known to use a private jet to support its recruiting efforts. The Kansas Jayhawks, a key member of the Big 12 Conference, have been known for their excellence in men's basketball, having won the national championship four separate times, including recently in 2022. As a result, the university has one of the most elaborate and extensive athletic recruiting programs anywhere in the country.

To support its recruiting efforts, the university operates a Cessna Citation CJ4 business jet, which bears registration N414KU. The aircraft was manufactured in 2014, and it is based out of Lawrence Regional Airport (LWC), located near the university's campus. The jet improves the overall level of flexibility that the University of Kansas can bring to its recruiting efforts, allowing athletic staff and major executives to reach recruiting events with minimal layovers.

Cessna Citation II Crashes In Caracas, Venezuela

A Cessna S550 Citation S/II crashed shortly after take-off from Caracas' La Carlota General Francisco de Miranda Air Base.

The CJ4 offers a range of 2,165 nautical miles, making it one of the most dynamic light business jets on the market. The aircraft cruises at around 520 miles per hour and can seat up to 10 passengers. The plane, which is equipped with Williams FJ33-3A engines, can take off from runways as short as 3,400 feet.

The use of this private jet by the University of Kansas demonstrates an interesting phenomenon. Due to the university being located in a rural area, travel options for coaches are extremely limited, meaning that operating a private jet can save enormous amounts of time. For universities located near major airports, these time savings can be smaller. For more rural campuses with high-level athletic programs, using private jets can make recruiting far easier.

4 University of Wyoming

The university does not operate a private aircraft for its athletic program

The University of Wyoming operates a private plane, although it fascinatingly does not use it for its athletic recruiting program. Instead, the Department of Atmospheric Science has used a Beechcraft King Air private aircraft for research since 1977, and the plane has been involved in multiple different research studies. According to the university, the plane has been involved in all the following:

  • Boundary-layer turbulence and flux studies
  • Air-sea interaction studies
  • Radiometric and satellite validation studies

The plane, unlike all the others included on this list, has an impressive set of scientific instruments onboard. This includes the Wyoming Cloud Radar and multiple other scanning systems, all of which can help researchers take down specialized measurements. The aircraft and its instruments are available to researchers across the university's many departments, and the plane is also used by government agencies and private-sector firms.

5 Penn State University

The research university operates two different private aircraft

Pennsylvania's primary state university operates two different aircraft, one of which is a 2013 Cessna 525A business jet, which is also known as the CitationJet. The aircraft are primarily used by the university's president and head football coach James Franklin, and they are mostly flown for university use, with limited personal uses also permitted. These aircraft allow the university to recruit efficiently for its athletic programs, while also supporting fundraising efforts and alumni relations.

According to Spotlight PA, the aircraft can be used quite frequently, with the jet logging over 40 flights on average per month. Penn State has been relatively secretive, however, when it comes to providing details about the costs of operating these aircraft or who else is on these planes when they fly around the country. Nonetheless, they remain an important asset for Penn State, a the campus is, much like that of the University of Kansas, located in an exceptionally rural area. As a result, the planes are often used to shuttle important personnel to nearby airports with better commercial service.
