The Talos Principle - Update 277544 - public beta
Build 277544 for The Talos Principle is now available in beta "publicbeta", which does not require a password.

To install the beta, do this:
- locate the game in the Steam's "Library" panel
- right click and invoke "Properties"
- select the "Betas" tab
- choose "publicbeta"

NOTE: If you want to later change back from publicbeta to default, savegames may be lost! We test for forward upgrades, but not in the other direction.

Here are the changes:

New features:
- Added support for latest ATi and nVidia cards.

Improvements:
- Improved stability and performance on Vulkan API.

Bug fixes:
- Fixed issues with fullscreen rendering on Vulkan on Linux.
- Fixed a rare crash when exiting the game.

Thanks for the update!

Any news on the freezes related to the GTX 970 gpu on Linux?

I dont think the latest Ati Cards can even run this game. People, they are AMD now and since 2010(?) there are only "AMD Radeon"

- Problem with resetting refresh rate to 50 Hz on the video cards, AMD isn't solved by anyone..
- The shadows seem all too disgusting. Once you get soft shadows ?
- Issue with double-clicking on the "Back" button has not been solved. Try to go to settings "deeper". If you press the button without lifting the mouse when you click on it the program will "double tap" and you'll be back to two pages ago..

I confirm the resetting refresh rate to 50 hz problem in vulkan, i'm on a R9 270X with latest beta drivers 16.11.3

Ah, thank you, the black bar is gone.

I'm getting some pretty bad freezing on a GTX 1080 on Linux as well, doesn't seem to be GPU-specific.

It appears that the overbright rendering bug (with radv) is fixed now.

About the freezing issue, it may be not the game's fault but the driver itself (although I can't be sure ofc).
I have an Unity Vulkan/OpenGL demo and it also gets stuck while in Vulkan mode in a similar fashion.

From the Wikipedias:

"On 30 August 2010, John Trikola announced that AMD would retire the ATI brand for its graphics chipsets in favor of the AMD name."

They are probably thinking that since everyone still knows what ATI is, it's just easier to refer to it as such. Then again...can pre-2010 cards even run this game? :P

In other news... Found this little tidbit on the Intertubes...

Could be. Talos freezes with 370.28 for me, but works fine after downgrade to 367.57. (645M)

Unfortunately 367 means 5-10% lower performance.

Thanks for the tip about the drivers performance, that's something interesting to test.
Usually the SL branch has some possible improvements not yet added to the LL branch and I see two Vulkan related entries in there, maybe they're responsible to the increased perf.

Do we already know a reason or even a fix for the periodic frame hicup/variance issue?

System:
GTX970, i7-3770k. 16gb RAM,
Arch Linux (4.8.7),
NVidia drivers 375.10

Niiru, that's because driver is messing up frame sync. Your game is actually running at 60fps, the stuttering is just due to bad timing. In the current APIs there are no facilities to get the correct timing to prevent this kind of things, unfortunately. But I've been nagging the IHVs to do something about it for more than 3 years now. I hope something will come out of it.
The closest approximation you can use at this time is the VDPAU prototype you can enable this way: http://steamcommunity.com/app/257510/discussions/0/496880503061724338/ . It is not perfect, but if your machine can actually hold 60fps, it should be able to work better with it. Note that it is only available on Linux, and only for NVidia GPUs that support the specific VDPAU/OpenGL extension used there.

Thank you very much for the explanation, AlenL :)
However, this problem seems to show only with using Vulkan, OpenGL runs fine. The ogl_bEnableVDPAU=1 does not seem to affect the game running on Vulkan and vlk_bEnableVDPAU=1 does not exist.

But maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem and the missing API calls also apply to VLK. Rather strange that I have not seen many users confirming this behavior, though.

The GTX 970 supports VDPAU at least up to Feature set E, if that matters.
