Find & set up Bluetooth devices near your Android device

To connect some devices to your phone without a cord, you can use Bluetooth. After you pair a Bluetooth device for the first time, your devices can connect automatically. If your phone is connected to something through Bluetooth, at the top of the screen, you'll find a Bluetooth icon πŸ‘ Image

Important:

Turn Bluetooth on or off from the Settings app

  1. From the top of the screen, swipe down.
  2. Tap Bluetooth πŸ‘ Image
    .
Tip: To save battery, turn off Bluetooth when not in use. Bluetooth is off in Airplane mode.

Pair a Bluetooth accessory through the Settings app

Important:
  1. From the top of the screen, swipe down.
  2. Touch and hold Bluetooth πŸ‘ Image
    .
  3. Tap Pair new device.
  4. To pair your device, tap the name of the Bluetooth device.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Tip: If you’re asked for a passcode and don't have it, try the most common ones like "0000" or "1234."

Connect to an accessory that’s already paired

  1. Make sure the Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Touch and hold Bluetooth πŸ‘ Image
    .
  3. Under "Saved devices," select a paired disconnected device.
  4. When your phone and the Bluetooth device are connected, the device shows as "Connected."

Rename, disconnect, or manage a Bluetooth device

  1. From the top of the screen, swipe down.
  2. Touch and hold Bluetooth πŸ‘ Image
    .
    • If your accessory is listed under "Media devices:" Next to your device's name, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
      .
    • If no accessories are listed under "Saved devices:" Tap See all. Next to your accessory's name, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
      .
  3. Make your change:
    • To change the accessory's name: At the top, tap Edit πŸ‘ Image
      .
    • To disconnect: Tap Disconnect πŸ‘ Image
      .
    • To remove the device from your phone completely: Tap Forget πŸ‘ Image
      .
    • On some devices, you can turn other settings on or off.
Tip: On a tablet that people share, each person can change the overall Bluetooth settings.

Select your Bluetooth device type

Your Android device automatically categorizes Fast Pair devices and car kits that support Android Auto projection.
If your Android device doesn't automatically categorize your Bluetooth device, you can manually select your Bluetooth device type:
  1. Open your device’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Under "Media devices," select a device's settings.
  4. Select β€œAudio device type:”
    • Not set
    • Speaker
    • Headphones
    • Car
    • Hearing device
    • Other

Tip: Setting the correct device type can help:

  • Spatial audio experience on specific audio device types.
  • Hearing health and loudness measurement features.

Change your Android device's Bluetooth name

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices πŸ‘ and then
    Connection preferences πŸ‘ and then
    Bluetooth.
  3. Make sure "Bluetooth" is turned on.
  4. Tap Device name.
  5. Enter a new name.
  6. Tap Rename.
