Set up Google Assistant on your phone or tablet

You can find info and help you get things done with Google Assistants. With Assistant, you can do actions like:

  • Ask questions
  • Make calls
  • Send texts
  • Schedule reminders
  • Provide directions

On Android devices, Google Assistant is available in the following languages:

Check if your device has what it needs

To use the Google Assistant, you’ll need a device with:

  • Android 5.0+ with at least 1.0GB of available memory or Android 6.0+ with at least 1.5GB of available memory
  • Google app 6.13 or higher
  • Google Play services
  • 720p or higher screen resolution
  • Device's language set to a language listed above
  1. On your device, open the Google app πŸ‘ Google Search
    .
  2. On the Home screen, tap Menu πŸ‘ Menu
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings πŸ‘ and then
    About.
    • Look for the version number at the top.
  3. If your version is below 6.13, go to the Google app page.
  4. Tap Update.
  1. On your device, go to the Google Play services page.
  2. Tap Install.
    • If you find "Uninstall" or "Deactivate," you already have Google Play services.

Start a conversation

  1. On your device, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google."
    • If the Google Assistant is off, you'll be asked to turn it on.
  2. Ask a question or say a command.

Tip: On devices that run Android 8.0 and up, you can also talk to the Google Assistant when your device is locked when you say "Hey Google." Learn how to control what information displays on your lockscreen.

To get ideas, just ask your Assistant "What can you do?" Learn about what you can ask Assistant.

Other ways to reach your Assistant

  1. On your device, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Tap Keyboard πŸ‘ Type

  3. Enter a question or command.
  4. Tap Send πŸ‘ Send Arrow

  1. On your device, open the Google Assistant app πŸ‘ Assistant (iOS)

  • On Pixel 6 and later, this includes Fold, press and hold the Power button.
  • If you have a Pixel 4a or later, this includes Fold that runs Android 12 and up and want to talk to Assistant with the power button:
    1. Open device Settings.
    2. Tap System πŸ‘ and then
      Gestures.
    3. Press and hold the Power button.

Choose how to communicate with Google Assistant

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Google Home
  2. Under "All settings," tap General πŸ‘ and then
    Preferred input.
  3. Choose your preferred input.
    • To say your question or command, tap Voice.
    • To type your question or command, tap Keyboard.

Tip: On Pixel 6 and later, this includes Fold, you can talk to Assistant without the need to say β€œHey Google” for some tasks. Learn how to turn on Quick phrases.
