Change your car's Gemini or Google Assistant settings

Note: Gemini is now available for cars with Google built-in. Compatibility and availability may vary by car manufacturer, language, region, and data plan. For more information, contact your vehicle’s manufacturer.

If you use Gemini or Google Assistant built into your car, you can change the settings for language, voice control, and app preferences.

Opt in to Gemini

Gemini is available for eligible cars with Google built-in. Learn more about how you can use Gemini while you drive.

You can choose to upgrade your car’s Google Assistant to Gemini. This upgrade is optional, and you can opt in or opt out of Gemini at any time.

In order to opt in to Gemini, you must first be and have a language setting that is compatible with Gemini.

When you start your car, you will receive an on-screen notification to opt into Gemini. You can either tap Use Gemini to opt in or No Thanks to dismiss the notification to opt out. If you do not pick one and instead tap elsewhere on the screen, the system will ask you again at another time.

You can opt into Gemini at any time:

On your car screen, open Settings 👁 Image
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Google Assistant.
Tap Switch to use Gemini.

To switch back to Google Assistant:

On your car screen, open Settings 👁 Image
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Gemini.
Tap Switch to use Google Assistant.

Google Assistant

Turn personal results on or off in Google Assistant

When you turn on Personal results in Google Assistant, destination and media recommendations appear on the car display. Anyone in the car can view, tap, or act on them.

Tap your car display home screen.
Go to your apps.
Tap Settings 👁 Settings
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Google Assistant.
Turn on or off Allow personal results.

Important: The personal results setting does not control Assistant features provided by third party apps. Learn more about what happens when you turn on Personal results at Google privacy policy.

Change language settings

Important: In cars with Google built-in, you can set one primary language in Google Assistant.

Assistant features are not available in all countries and languages.

Tap the car display home screen.
Go to your apps.
Tap Settings 👁 Settings
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Google Assistant.
Tap Languages 👁 and then
choose a language.

Turn voice settings on or off

Tap the car display home screen.
Go to your apps.
Tap Settings 👁 Settings
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Google Assistant.
Turn on or off Say “Hey Google.”

Change your app preferences

With Google built-in, when you talk to Google Assistant in your car, your queries are routed to your default apps and preferences. You can change your preferences in your Google Assistant settings.

Important: Apps that do not support integration with Google Assistant will not appear as an option.

Change your default navigation app

Tap the car display home screen.
Go to your apps.
Tap Settings 👁 Settings
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Google Assistant.
Tap Default navigation app.
Select an application.

Gemini

Manage which apps Gemini connects to

When you opt in to Gemini, you are in control of which apps Gemini can connect to.

1. On your car screen, open Settings 👁 Image
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Gemini.
2. Tap Apps

Privacy Help Hub

The Privacy Help Hub provides answers to your questions about your privacy when using Gemini.

1. On your car screen, open Settings 👁 Image
👁 and then
Google 👁 and then
Gemini.
2. Tap Privacy Help Hub. This will open a QR code that you can scan to open the page.

Change language settings

Important: In cars with Google built-in, you can set one primary language in Gemini.

Note: If you used to see an option to select a preferred navigation app and no longer see this option, Gemini will now default to the last navigation app you used.
