How to cast from the YouTube app and YouTube.com

You can cast videos from YouTube to your Chromecast device. Any device connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast can cast.

To discover Cast-enabled devices, you must enable Local Network for mobile devices with iOS 14 or later and computers with MacOS 15 or later. Learn more about Local Network for casting.

Cast YouTube

  1. Make sure your mobile device or computer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.
  2. Open the YouTube app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    or YouTube.com.
  3. Tap Cast ๐Ÿ‘ Inactive cast extension
    .
  4. Tap the Chromecast device you want to cast to ๐Ÿ‘ and then
Play. The content should play on the TV where your Chromecast is connected.

To stop the cast session, tap Cast ๐Ÿ‘ Inactive cast extension
๐Ÿ‘ and then

, then select your mobile device from the list of available devices.โ€‹

You can continue to use your mobile device to perform other tasks while your video plays on your Chromecast. To play, pause or navigate with the scrollbar, use your device as you normally would to control playback.

Tip: If you get an error when you sign in to YouTube, try the troubleshooting steps in Sign in to the YouTube app on your smart TV or game console. If your device is an older Chromecast model (Chromecast (2nd and 3rd gen), Chromecast Ultra or TV that works with Google Cast), use your mobile device to control YouTube playback.

Play multiple videos back-to-back

To add videos to your Chromecastโ€™s TV queue, select Add to TV queue on your mobile device or computer while a video plays

To check your TV queue, open the YouTube app or YouTube.com on your mobile device and find the TV queue on the screen. You might need to go back to the YouTube homepage to find the TV queue.

Any device thatโ€™s connected to your Wi-Fi network can cast videos and add to the TV queue.

Tip:

  • Some videos might not play on Chromecast. Videos not approved for mobile playback might not work with Chromecast.
  • Video quality might appear lower at first, but it quickly improves to the highest possible quality because YouTube uses adaptive bitrate streaming. If the video doesnโ€™t buffer at playback speed, the video downgrades to a lower quality setting, which allows for smoother playback.
  • Casting from YouTube is supported from the YouTube app, YouTube Music app, YouTube.com, and most embedded YouTube videos. These features are still available in the mobile app while casting. While a video plays on your TV, you can still use your mobile device to browse content and get personalized suggestions.
    • Certain YouTube features such as user login, liking, commenting, subscribing, content browsing, and content suggestions might not be available when you cast to older Chromecast models. These features are still available in the mobile app while casting. While a video plays on your TV, you can still use your mobile device to browse content and get personalized suggestions.

If you have trouble with your Chromecast, try to troubleshoot an issue.
