Set up your thermostat after professional installation

Important: This article only applies to Nest Thermostats and Nest Learning Thermostats (4th gen) that were professionally installed. Learn how to tell which Nest thermostat you have.

During professional installation, the expert installer configured your thermostat to work with your heating and cooling system. To finish setup, you need to add it to your Google Home app.

You must connect the thermostat to the Google Home app to use most of its features. Before you add it to the app, you’ll only be able to adjust the current setpoint and temperature mode on the thermostat.

Prepare for device set up

Before you start, make sure to:

Add your thermostat to the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Image
    .
    • You may be prompted to create a new home if you don’t have one already.
  2. At the top right, tap Add πŸ‘ Add Icon
    πŸ‘ and then
    Device πŸ‘ Image
    .

    • Or, if a setup screen for your device appears, tap Set up or Next.
      • If it’s not the correct device, tap Not now or Set up a different device.
  3. Scan the QR code of your device. A check mark appears when the scan is complete.

    • If you can’t scan the QR code:
      • Tap Use setup code, then enter the setup code for your device.

Tip: The Google Home app provides additional details to help you locate and use your device setup code.

      • Tap Add a different way, enter your device in the search bar, then select your device.
  4. Wait for your app to connect to the device. Once it’s finished, you’ll see a confirmation screen that says, β€œConnected.”
  5. When you reach the β€œGet started” screen, tap Already installed.
Tip: This step ensures that you don’t overwrite any of the important equipment settings your installer already configured for you.
  6. Choose a Wi-Fi network to connect to.
  7. Tell the Google Home app where in the home the thermostat is located. This is used for device organization and voice commands.
  8. You’ll be prompted to set up a few key features. If you want, you can skip this step and configure them later.
  9. Follow the in-app steps to complete setup.

For Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) users only: You’ll be asked to configure the Nest Temperature Sensor included in the box, which can be done now or later. Learn how to set up the Nest Temperature Sensor.
