How to play media on Google smart speaker or display using Bluetooth

Connect your mobile device to your Google smart speaker or display with Bluetooth to listen to music, audiobooks, podcasts, and other media.

Before you begin, make sure you’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.

Step 1: Pair your mobile device and speaker or display

  1. Open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Image
    .
  2. Verify that you’re in the right home. The name of the home is at the top of the screen.
    1. To switch to a different home:
      • At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
      • Tap Switch home πŸ‘ Image
        , then choose the home you want to switch to.
  3. Tap Home πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    All devices πŸ‘ Image
    , then touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Audio.
    • If this is your first time to use Bluetooth on this device:
      1. Tap Paired Bluetooth devices πŸ‘ and then
        Enable Pairing Mode.
      2. Go back to Audio.
  5. Tap Default music speaker πŸ‘ and then
    Pair Bluetooth speaker. Your Google smart device will then scan for Bluetooth devices.
  1. On your mobile device's Home screen, tap Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Bluetooth.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth πŸ‘ Toggle On Switch
    .
  3. Tap the name of the speaker or display you'd like to pair.

Important: Steps vary based on your computer or laptop model.

Windows OS

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the search box, type β€œBluetooth,” and then select Bluetooth settings from the list.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth.
  4. Click the name of the speaker or display you’d like to pair.

Mac OS

  1. Click the Apple menu πŸ‘ and then
    System Preferences πŸ‘ and then
    Bluetooth πŸ‘ Image
    .
  2. Turn on Bluetooth.
  3. Select the name of the speaker or display you’d like to pair.

Step 2: Connect your mobile device and speaker or display

Important: Bluetooth range varies between mobile devices. To get the best performance, keep your mobile device close to your speaker or display when connected through Bluetooth.

If your speaker or display is paired with multiple mobile devices, it connects to the most recently paired device. Learn how to check which mobile devices are connected to your speaker or display.

  1. Open Bluetooth settings on your mobile device.
  2. Under "Available devices," tap the speaker or display you paired to your mobile device.
To do this: Say "Ok Google or "Hey Google," then:

Connect

"Connect"
"Connect to Bluetooth"

Disconnect

"Disconnect"
"Disconnect Bluetooth"

Step 3: Play media

Your mobile device can now play media on your speaker or display. Use media voice commands to listen to:

  • Music
  • Audiobooks
  • Podcasts

Manage paired and connected devices

Check which mobile device is paired with your device

  1. Open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Image

    All devices πŸ‘ Image
    , then touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then

    Paired Bluetooth devices.
  4. You'll find your mobile device and the date it was paired.

Unpair mobile device and your speaker or display

  1. Open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Image
    .
  2. Tap Home πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    All devices πŸ‘ Image
    , then touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Audio πŸ‘ and then
    Paired Bluetooth devices.
  4. Tap the X next to the device you want to unpair πŸ‘ and then
    Unpair.
To do this: Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
Turn on your speaker or display’s Bluetooth "Turn on Bluetooth"
Check pairing status "Is Bluetooth active?"
"Is Bluetooth paired?"
"Is Bluetooth connected?"
Exit Bluetooth pairing "Cancel"
"Cancel pairing"
"Cancel Bluetooth pairing"
Clear all paired devices "Clear all paired Bluetooth devices"
"Clear all paired devices"
"Clear all Bluetooth devices"
"Clear all devices"
"Clear all my devices"
"Unpair devices"
