Play news on Google Cast-enabled TVs with your speaker or display

Watch the news on any voice-supported TV with Google streaming devices or Google Cast. Use only your voice, YouTube, and a Google smart speaker or display.

This functionality is available in the US.

Step 1: Link TVs using the Google Home app

These steps are optional if you only want to control your TV with your phone or tablet. However, if you want to use voice commands through your speaker or display to control your TV, follow the steps below.
  1. Open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Google Home app
    .
  2. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google device.
  3. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
  4. Tap Home πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    All devices πŸ‘ Image
    , then touch and hold your device's tile.
  5. At the top right, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Recognition & sharing.
  6. Check for a banner at the top of the page that states β€œEnable voice control and more.”
    • If the banner appears, tap it and follow the steps to link your TV.
    • If the banner doesn't appear but your email address appears under β€œLinked account(s),” your TV is already linked.

If you get an "Error when linking device" message, factory reset your Google streaming device.

The following Cast devices can play news videos using your speaker or display:

  1. Chromecast
  2. TVs that work with Cast
  3. Android TV
  4. Chromecast with Google TV
  5. Google TV Streamer
Important: Some Smart TVs may appear to support Cast technology because the functionality is similar to casting, but they don’t actually support Cast technology. Learn about Smart TVs that support Cast technology.

Step 2: Watch news on YouTube

If you use Gemini for Home voice assistant

To do this:

Say "Ok Google" or β€œHey Google," then:

Watch general news

"Watch the news," "Watch the news on my TV," "What's the latest video news," or "Play news videos"

Watch category news

Categories include sports, politics, business, and more

"Watch <category> news," "Watch <category> news on my TV," or "Play <category> news on my TV"

Watch provider news

"Watch <provider> news" or "Watch <provider> news on my TV"

Watch topical news

"Watch news about <topic>" or "Play news about <topic> on TV"

Pause

"Pause"

If you use Google assistant

To do this: Say "Ok Google" or β€œHey Google," then:

Watch category news

Categories include sports, politics, business, and more

Google smart speakers

Important: Speaker touch controls change the volume of media and your voice assistant only. To change the volume of alarms and timers, use the Google Home app or the Quick settings menu on a smart display.

The Google Nest Mini (2nd gen) has a wall mount screw slot on the back. If your device doesn’t have a wall mount screw slot, it's a Google Home Mini (1st gen).

To reverse right and left controls:

Google Nest displays

Important: To control the volume of alarms and timers, use the Quick settings menu. The volume button and media card adjust the volume of media and your voice assistant only.

Use the media card to pause, resume, play the previous or next song, or change the devices that are playing media.

  1. To open the Quick settings menu, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap Volume πŸ‘ Image

  3. To change the volume, swipe the slider left or right.
  1. To find the media card, swipe down from the top, then tap Media.
    • If the screen shows the media that's playing, tap the screen instead.
  2. Use the controls on the card to pause, resume, or play the previous or next song.
  3. To open more controls, tap [display name] πŸ‘ Image
    . You’ll get a list of available devices and a volume control slider for each device that’s currently playing.
    • To start or stop playing media on a device, tap the radio button next to its name.
    • To change the volume on an active device, swipe its slider left or right.

Google Pixel Tablet (Hub Mode)

When you change the volume on your Pixel Tablet while it's docked, the volume on the speaker dock will also change.

To do this: Touch Google Pixel Tablet like this:

Press the side button closest to the power button.

When media is playing in Hub Mode, you can control playback on your lock and Home screens by touch. A media widget will automatically appear with buttons to control what's playing.

For easy touch control, some media apps have widgets you can add to your Home screen. When the widget on your Home screen, you can control the volume, pause playback, skip or change songs, podcasts, radio station, and more.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Image

  3. Tap Home πŸ‘ Image
     πŸ‘ and then
    Favorites πŸ‘ Image
    .
  4. Tap the current media session for:
    • Playback controls
    • Volume control (media and voice assistant)
    • Playback device selection

Tip: If you have more than one device or group capable of playing, tap the name of the device or group you want to play music from.

Your device will play from your default music provider. You can pause, resume, change volume, and skip forward or backward in the song.
