Update a sent message

You can edit a Rich Communication Services (RCS), SMS, or MMS message after you send it. This feature works:

  • RCS
  • One-on-one conversation with iPhone users who also have RCS chats turned on
  • Group RCS chats even if other participants don't have editing capabilities

Editing is enabled in the app only, not on the web UI.

The ability to edit a sent message expires after 15 minutes, regardless whether the recipient has read the message or responded to it.

An "Edited" label appears above the message in the conversation for both the sender and recipient.

Edit a sent message

  1. On your device, open Google Messages ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. Touch and hold a sent message in a conversation.
  3. At the top of the screen, tap Edit ๐Ÿ‘ Edit
    .
    • If you touch and hold a message after 15 minutes, the Edit ๐Ÿ‘ Edit
      wonโ€™t be available.
  4. Edit the message.
  5. To update the sent message, tap Check ๐Ÿ‘ Check
    .
    • To exit the editing view, next to โ€œEdit message,โ€ tap Exit ๐Ÿ‘ Tap
      .

If a recipient doesn't support the edit feature, theyโ€™ll receive a new message marked with a `*`.
