Frequently asked questions

The early version of the app includes many core features of NotebookLM and is designed to help you understand anything, anywhere. Learn more about the NotebookLM mobile app.

Sometimes NotebookLM can’t answer your question because of:

  • Safety flags: The content of your source contains language that triggers a safety flag. This occurs with sensitive topics like violence, sexuality, or obscenity, even in historical contexts.
  • Unclear phrases: When your notebook contains many sources, NotebookLM retrieves the most relevant information based on your question, then builds a response from it. A specific question helps NotebookLM locate the most relevant pieces of information.
    • Tip: Make your question more precise and understandable.
  • Information not in sources: NotebookLM answers questions based on the information provided in your uploaded sources. If the answer isn't in the source material, it won't provide a response.

If you think a response generated in NotebookLM is offensive or unsafe, let us know.

To report a response, select thumbs down 👁 Image
👁 and then
Offensive/unsafe 👁 and then
Submit.

We’ll review the report and take appropriate actions to improve the safety of our model.

Why does the share menu show a lock icon?

While a notebook isn't shared with anyone the lock icon will appear indicating the notebook is private. It changes to the shared icon when the notebook is shared individually with users, and a globe icon when the notebook is publicly shared.

If you find content in a privately shared notebook that violates the law, let us know by either opening the settings menu in your notebook and selecting Report Notebook or by visiting this direct link.

We’ll review the material and consider if we’ll block, limit, or remove access to it.

Tip: You can also report through report content on Google.

Your data will never be shared by NotebookLM. Learn how NotebookLM protects your data.

With NotebookLM, you:

  • Get 100 notebooks, with up to 50 sources each and 500,000 words each.
  • Have daily limits of 50 chat queries and 3 audio generations.

Learn more about upgrading NotebookLM to increase your limits.

The current limit is 500,000 words per source or up to 200MB for local uploads. There’s no page limit.

Sources can’t be imported into NotebookLM if:

  • It exceeds the allowed 500,000 word limit per source.
  • The file size exceeds the allowed 200MB limit.
  • Your original PDF file is copy-protected.
  • Notes: Only when you specifically select it.
  • Sources: Always used in either the entire set or the subset you select.
  • Conversation history: Used to generate responses.
If your source content is too short, NotebookLM references the entire document without a cited individual text from your source.
Unfortunately, there's currently no way to recover deleted notes.
This feature isn’t supported yet.
