Use the Phone app to record calls

You can use your Phone app to:

  • Always record calls from unknown numbers.
  • Always record calls from selected contacts.
  • Record an individual call.
Tips:
  • You can playback saved recordings and also modify duration to keep recorded calls.
  • You can see when call recording is active with the call recording indicator.

Important: Only certain devices and carriers support recording calls. Some laws require all people on the call to consent to being recorded. Before the call begins, call participants are notified that the call is recorded.

To record your phone calls:

  • Non-Pixel devices must run Android 9 and up.
  • Pixel devices must be Pixel 6 and up with Android 14 and up.
  • You must have the latest version of the Phone app.
  • You must be in a country or region where call recording is supported. Call recording is widely available, but not in all countries or regions. Features vary based on your country or region.
Important: Itโ€™s up to you to follow all laws on recording phone conversations. Use call recording responsibly and turn it on only when needed. Automatic call recording and deletion aren't available in all markets.
  1. On your Android device, open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More options ๐Ÿ‘ More
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Settings ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Call recording.
  3. Under โ€œAlways record,โ€ turn on Numbers not in your contacts.
  4. Tap Always record.

  1. On your Android device, open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More options ๐Ÿ‘ More
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Settings ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Call recording.
  3. Under โ€œAlways record,โ€ tap Selected numbers.
  4. Turn on Always record selected numbers.
  5. At the top right, tap Add ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  6. Choose a contact.
  7. Tap Always record.
  8. (Optional): Repeat these steps for every contact you want to record.
Tip: You can also open a contact to turn on call recording. At the bottom right of the contact card, tap Edit contact ๐Ÿ‘ and then
Always record calls.

Start a recording from a call

Important: The first time you record a call, youโ€™ll be advised you must comply with local laws related to recording calls. Many jurisdictions require consent by all parties to record the call.

To protect the privacy of all users, when you start recording, both parties are notified with a disclosure that the call is being recorded. When you stop recording, both parties are notified with a disclosure that the call is no longer being recorded.

For non-Pixel devices:

  1. Open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. Make or receive a call.
  3. To record your call, on the ongoing call screen, tap Record ๐Ÿ‘ Record
    .
  4. To stop recording, tap Stop recording ๐Ÿ‘ Stop recording
    .

For Pixel devices:

  1. Open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. Make or receive a call.
  3. To record your call, tap Call Assist ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Call Recording.
  4. To stop recording, tap Call Assist ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Stop.

Keep in mind

Important: When a user deletes a call log, the call recording is also deleted.

You canโ€™t record a call in progress:

  • Until the call is answered
  • If the callโ€™s on hold
  • When you create a conference call

Find a recorded call

To keep your recordings private, theyโ€™re stored on your device. Calls arenโ€™t saved or backed up off-device.

To find your recording:

  1. Open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. Tap Home ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  3. Tap on the caller you recorded.
    • If you recorded the most recent call: Go to the player in the "Home" screen.
    • If you recorded a previous call: Tap History. Then select the recording from the list of calls.
  4. Tap Play ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  5. Optional: To share a recorded call, tap Share ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .

Tip: You can share recorded calls to supported apps, such as email or messaging apps.

Set how long to keep recorded calls

  1. On your Android device, open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image

  2. At the top right, tap More options ๐Ÿ‘ More
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Settings ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Call recording.
  3. Under โ€œRecordings,โ€ tap Delete recordings.
  4. Set how long you want to keep a recorded call before itโ€™s automatically deleted.
  5. Tap Confirm.
Optional: To delete all recordings, tap Delete all recordings now ๐Ÿ‘ and then
Delete.

Delete a recorded call

  1. Open the Phone app ๐Ÿ‘ Image

  2. Tap Home ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  3. Find the number or contact of the recorded call you want to delete.
  4. Tap History.
  5. In the list of calls, find the recording and swipe left.
