Edit your photos

• To edit just by asking in Google Photos, you must be 18 years old and over.
• You need a personal Google Account. These features aren’t available to Google Workspace or school accounts.

Before you get started

Download and install the Google Photos app.

Tips:

• While you edit a photo, the icon turns blue when you apply certain features to a photo.
• To compare your edited photo to the original, tap and hold the image preview.
• To undo changes to an edited photo, tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
  👁 and then
  Revert. You can't undo changes to photos you save as a copy.
• After you edit a photo, to save changes, at the bottom, tap Save. You may find 2 options on how to save:
  • Save: Saves your changes to the original photo. You might not be able to use this option for certain edits.
  • Save as copy: Makes a new photo with your edits without changes to the original.

• Some editing features aren’t supported on 64-bit devices. To use most features, you must have at least 3 GB RAM and iOS 18 and up. Other features may require 4 GB or 6 GB RAM.
• To use some editing tools, you must download the tool first. To install, tap the editing tool 👁 and then
  Install.
  • Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and have available device storage. If you’re having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi, you can use mobile data.
  • After you install an editing tool, you may need to close and reopen the photo editor to use it.
• If you don’t have enough device storage:
  • You can’t download some editing tools. To make room on your device for editing tools, learn how to free up space.
  • Editing tools may be removed. You must reinstall the tool to use it again.

You can edit photos with the available editing features.

Remove or edit unwanted objects in a photo

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. Open the photo that you want to edit.
3. Tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
   .
4. Tap, circle, or brush to select an area of the photo you want to edit.
   • To start over on your selection: Tap Deselect.
   • To add or subtract objects from your current selection: Tap Refine selection 👁 and then
     Add or Subtract.
5. From the suggested tools and features, select an option.
   • To remove your selection: Tap Erase.
   • The suggested tools or features may vary based on their availability.
6. After you’re finished, tap Done.

Tip: To remove unwanted distractions, in the “Actions” tab, tap Magic Eraser 👁 Image

Important: Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and iOS 18+.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. Open the photo you want to edit.
3. At the top, tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
   .
   • If you have Ask Photos turned on, tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
     👁 and then
     Tools.
   • To crop the photo directly from the landing page: Drag the crop handles to the desired size.
   • To crop the photo to different aspect ratios, like a square: Tap Aspect ratio 👁 Image
     .
   • To rotate a photo 90 degrees: Tap Rotate 👁 Image
     .
   • To adjust the photo’s orientation: Tap Straighten 👁 Image
     .
   • If a photo is too cropped in or not properly framed: Use the “Auto frame” to recompose or extend the background of your photo.
     • You can access “Auto frame” through the “Crop” modal.
       • Auto frame uses AI to fill in parts of a picture or expand as needed.
   • To flip the photo: Tap Flip 👁 Image
     .
4. When you’re finished, tap the Checkmark 👁 Done
   👁 and then
   Save.

Important:

• Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and iOS 18+.
• To use improved Unblur, your device must have at least 6 GB RAM.

You can edit your photos in unique ways with select features like portrait blur, Ultra HDR, or enhanced zoom. Editing features are sorted by function to make photo enhancements easy for you.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. Open the photo you want to edit.
3. Tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
   .
   • Alternatively, you may need to tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
     👁 and then
     Tools.
4. Select the tools you want to use with your photo and make changes. You can find different editing features categorized within:
   • Actions: This includes Crop, Magic Eraser, Unblur, and more.
   • Filters: This includes Sky and more classic filters.
   • Lighting: This includes HDR effect, Portrait light, Brightness, Contrast, and more.
   • Color: This includes Saturation, Warmth, and more.
5. When you finish, tap the Checkmark 👁 Done
   .
6. To undo an effect, tap Close 👁 close
   .

Tip: You can use tool search to find tools like Brightness. At the bottom, tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
👁 and then
Tools 👁 and then
Search 👁 Image
. From there, enter the tool name.

Important: Your device must have iOS 18+.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. Tap the photo you want.
3. At the top, tap Menu 👁 More
   👁 and then
   Create 👁 Edit
   👁 and then
   Cinematic photo 👁 Image
   .
4. At the bottom, tap Save.

Tip: You can also create Cinematic photos another way:

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. At the top, tap Create 👁 Create
   👁 and then
   Cinematic photo.
3. Select a photo.
4. At the top, tap Create.
5. At the bottom, tap Save.

Important: When you change the date and time of your photo, Google Photos displays the updated date and time. If you share the photo to other apps or download it, the photo may show the original date and time saved by your camera.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. Tap a photo.
3. At the top, tap More 👁 More
   👁 and then
   About 👁 About Google+
   .
   • Alternatively, you can swipe up.
4. Tap the date and timestamp.
5. Choose a new date and time.
6. Tap Done.

Tips:

• Photos taken before 4 AM are sorted into the previous day.
• You can only change the date and timestamps in the Photos app for backed up photos.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. At the bottom, tap Collections.
3. Tap Albums.
4. Open a shared album.
5. Tap the photo or video that you want to edit.
6. Tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
   👁 and then
   Save.
7. A warning dialog will prompt:
   • To keep changes private, tap Save copy.
   • To keep the edits visible with others in your shared album, tap Save.

Tips:

• Only the owner of the original photo can edit a photo or video in a shared album.
• When editing shared photos or videos from your gallery:
  • To reflect edits to the shared album, tap Save.
  • To edit privately, tap Save copy.

Before you start

Important: This feature isn't available in all countries or regions at this time.

Before you can ask Photos to edit your pictures for you, you must:

• Have Face Groups turned on.
• In “Preferences” in Google Photos Settings, under “Gemini features in Photos,” opt in to:
  • Use Gemini in Photos
  • Ask Photos
• Have location estimates enabled. Learn how to manage your photos' location.

Opt in or out of Ask Photos

Important: If you opt out of Ask Photos, you can no longer ask Google Photos to edit your pictures for you.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
3. Tap Google Photos settings 👁 and then
   Preferences 👁 and then
   Gemini features in Photos.
4. Turn Ask Photos on or off.

Tips:

• When you opt in to Ask Photos, you may be asked to provide information about your photos. Learn how to confirm your face group and label others.
• If you can't opt in to Ask Photos with the instructions above, you may not yet be eligible to use this feature. Learn more about Ask Photos eligibility.

Enter, say, or describe the edits you want

Important:

• This feature uses the images within Face Groups to improve the quality when you edit pictures of your friends and family. Review how Photos uses Gemini models.
• This feature is still experimental, so it may provide unexpected or inaccurate results. You can help improve this feature by giving feedback on your results.
• The use of this feature is subject to the Google Terms of Service and the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
   .
2. Open the photo you want to edit.
3. Tap Edit 👁 Edit icon (2025)
   👁 and then
   Help me edit 👁 Image
   .
   • If you’ve already opted in to Ask Photos: Tap Continue.
   • If you haven’t opted in to Ask Photos:
     1. Tap Continue.
     2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
4. In the text box, enter the description of how you want to edit the photo.
   • Alternatively, you can tap the Microphone 👁 Microphone
     and speak.
5. Tap the Enter button.
6. Tap Save 👁 Select
