Reduce background noise in Microsoft Teams meetings

When your mic is turned on in a Teams meeting or call, background noise around youβ€”shuffling papers, slamming doors, barking dogs, and so onβ€”can distract others. Teams offers three levels of noise suppression to help keep meeting participants focused on the following platforms: the Teams desktop app, the Teams mobile app (iOS and Android), Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows, and Windows Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).

Turn on noise suppression

You can change this setting at any time. Noise suppression is turned on by default, but you can change the setting in Teams. The setting you choose will carry over to your next meeting or call.

From the main Teams window

  1. In Teams, select Settings and more πŸ‘ Teams settings and more icon.
    > Settings πŸ‘ Settings button
    .
  2. Select Devices πŸ‘ Teams settings device icon
    .
  3. Turn on the Noise suppression toggle.

For higher fidelity when playing music for other participants in a Teams meeting, see Share sound from your computer in a Teams meeting or live event.

Turn off noise suppression for high-fidelity microphones in a low-noise environment, such as a quiet studio.

From a meeting

  1. Select More actions πŸ‘ More options button
    > Audio settings πŸ‘ Teams audio settings
    in your meeting controls.
  2. Turn on the Noise suppression toggle.

Set the noise suppression level on iOS

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings πŸ‘ Settings button
    > Calling  πŸ‘ Audio call button
    .
  3. Tap Noise suppression and choose an option:
  • Auto (default) The Teams app optimizes for some level of noise suppression and is best for most situations.
  • Low suppresses low levels of persistent background noise, such as a computer fan or air conditioner. Use this setting to play your choice of music for other meeting participants to hear, like when waiting for a meeting to start.
  • High suppresses all background sound that isn't speech.
