Hi everyone,

I've found some weird and beautiful art by Shigeo Fukuda, an amazing optical illusion artist who has sadly passed away this year. You can view his artworks here:

His artworks include impossible looking images, including a 3D model of Escher's waterfall, and the sculpture Encore. Encore is a sculpture that looks like a pianist from one side and a violinist at the other side. Another of his artworks include a strange collection of objects that create the shadow of a piano.

i have tremendous respect for artists who can function both in the 2-d and 3-d spheres, and kuksi does it most magnificently.

he describes his sculptural works as "...wonderfully intricate constructions of pop culture effluvia like plastic model kits, injection molded toys, dolls, plastic skulls, knick-knack figurines, miniature fencing, toy animals, mechanical parts and ornate frames or furniture parts; assembled into grotesque tableaux that look a bit like an explosion in Hieronymus Bosch’s attic."

well how fortunate me...i've always wanted to dig around Bosch's attic.

Halloween is coming up, so I give you this astonishing and astonishingly grisly artist. Even if you don't go all caca like I do for eyeless deformed horrors of the Lovecraftian dimensions (ala Beksinski) you will certainly appreciate the obsessive amount of detail that went into these works. He constructs miniature environments so intensely as to be completely immersive, to look like sculptural windows into hell. Powell doesn't title these pieces, and his website, myspace, and flickr account are sparse on information, so here's a smattering (ew) of images of his miniature environments with my inane attempts at an explanation:

it grew out of a blog by Zoetica Ebb, Meredith Yayanos and Nadia Lev, which covers things of EXACTLY the kind of aesthetic this community is about. i'm half-tempted to just tell you all to get the RSS feed to Coilhouse, and not bother with everything else...

but that would be silly.

Hello, anyone who has become part of this blog. this is me trying to inject some life into it, or maybe experiencing an individual in love with life for my first time again. Sally Cruikshank was an animator active in the 70s-80s whose imagination runs from the hallucinotory edges of objects into whimsical expansion and distortion. Her oeuvre spans beyond talent and skill and into the pure realm of the visual cortex's pattern completions. Her work is pure unbounded imagination, constricted and distilled through the process of animating frame by frame. Here are selections of her work, as well as an interview:

the work of Japanese animator Tabaimo is one of the first things i saw at the Biannale this summer, and it stuck. she uses traditional japanese imagery in totally surprising ways, and the effect is that of precise, mindboggling, animated surrealism that resembles woodblock prints (what more could you ask for?)

unfortunately, i could only find one of her works online, but that too, is pretty damn awesome.

lets see, surreal japanese animation, collaboration with Batsheva Dance Company, and all that set to none other "AA XXX" by Peaches - i marvel that such a thing even exists.

but it does, and its called "Furo" and it makes me happy beyond words.

i was lucky enough to travel pretty intensely this summer, spending as much as time as possible in various galleries and museums (the most memorable being the Venice Biennale and the Kiasma Museum of Modern Art.) i have just gotten around to looking at my notes from all of those amazing visits, and thought i would share something that really stuck out in my memory:

Menlivayeva is a video installation artist from Almatay, Kazakhstan who explores something called "Romantic Punk Shamanism," mixing elements of the her own cultural traditions, muslim spiritualism, contemporary punk culture, and the power and mysticism of female identity. i found Menlibayeva's installation in the Kiasma in Helsinki as part of an exhibition called "Time of the Storytellers", and was totally blown away. projected on two giant screens in a totally white room, images of naked women buried waist-deep in snow spinning faster and faster, chanting songs and raising their hands to the sky...rituals involving fire, gold, and earth...women floating in the water with their hair flowing...sheep's heads, blood, horns, and snow...

beautiful, personal, wild imagery that was powerfully traditional, yet seemed very, very contemporary (and punk and feminist, in a true, raw, innate completely non-western type of way.) unfortunately, i was unable to find any of her actual videos online, but the images above are stills from them, and give you some idea of what her work is about.
