Hoi Europe and beyond!

Once again it is time for cloud native enthusiasts and professionals to converge and discuss cloud native computing in all its efficiency and complexity. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation‘s KubeCon+CloudNativeCon 2023 is being held later this month in Amsterdam, April 18-21, at the Rai Convention Centre.

In this latest edition of The New Stack podcast, we spoke with two of the event’s co-chairs who helped define this year’s themes for the show, which is expected to draw over 9,000 attendees: Aparna Subramanian, Shopify’s Director of Production Engineering for Infrastructure; and Cloud Native Infra and Security Enterprise Architect Frederick Kautz

For this episode, we delve into two subject matters:

One is what attendees can expect from the conference itself this year. As per usual, we can expect to hear keynotes from Priyanka Sharma, the executive director of CNCF; and Chris Aniszczyk, CNCF CTO. But there are many other surprises as well, the two anticipate. We discuss some of the fun touristy things to do around Amsterdam, as well as talk a bit about how the co-located events (Cloud Native WASM Day, Istio Day, Cloud Native Telco Day, and more) were rearranged this year.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon conferences gather adopters and technologists to further the education and advancement of cloud native computing. The vendor-neutral events feature domain experts and key maintainers behind popular projects like Kubernetes, Prometheus, Envoy, CoreDNS, containerd and more.

“The theme that we chose was community-in-bloom. We’re still healing from COVID. We’re getting back to a point where people are getting comfortable to show up to these types of events, again, especially with KubeCon as large as it is,” Kautz said. “We want to highlight the things that are going on in the community, and the strength and resiliency of the community towards continuing to build, not just Kubernetes, but also working together to build a whole ecosystem.”

The other theme discussed is the large long-term trends now shaping Kubernetes evolution. How is Kubernetes/cloud native computing useful in today’s enterprise environment? How does Kubernetes fit in with the latest trend of platform engineering? How do new emerging technologies such as eBPF and WebAssembly fit into the cloud native ecosystem?

“In my opinion, the biggest value of Kubernetes and cloud native cloud technologies in the enterprise is how much of a head start you get with it,”  Subramanian said. “We are not building a generic platform, but rather a platform for our business, for our domain in a way that delivers the most impact where it matters.”

It’s all about developer velocity, Subramanian added.

“With all of these technologies, enterprises are now able to build loosely-coupled systems and are able to go to the market much faster,” she said.

Pro-tip: Check back each day on The New Stack for contributed posts from some of the speakers at the event, courtesy of CNCF, which kindly sent them our way. Spectro Cloud’s Saad Malik has already identified “5 Trends to Watch for at KubeCon EU 2023,” and we’ll have more insights coming up on the daily.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) hosts critical components of the global technology infrastructure including Kubernetes, OpenTelemetry, and Argo. CNCF is the neutral home for cloud native collaboration, bringing together the industry’s top developers, end users, and vendors.
