Reinventing PostgreSQL for the Next Generation of Apps

The movement toward open source PostgreSQL is less about saving money and more about reliability, control and running edge, cloud and AI workloads.

Enterprises don’t modernize databases casually. They do it when latency becomes a business liability, when global uptime is non-negotiable, when licensing pressure grows unbearable and when developers need to move faster than procurement cycles allow. Increasingly, these factors are pushing organizations to PostgreSQL as a replacement for costly incumbents, such as Oracle and SAP.

In speaking with Dave Page, VP of engineering at open source Postgres vendor pgEdge and a longtime PostgreSQL community leader, one message was clear: This trend isn’t about simply choosing the “cheaper” database. It’s about reliability, control and the ability to run modern workloads: AI-driven, edge-distributed or Kubernetes-orchestrated, without vendor lock-in or infrastructure dead ends.

The Benefits of Open Source PostgreSQL

Page has worked across PostgreSQL’s ecosystem since the late 1990s. To him, its biggest differentiator isn’t a single feature — it’s PostgreSQL’s governance model. “There is no one company behind PostgreSQL,” Page said.

[Postgres] isn’t niche open source; it’s mainstream enterprise tech with a massive talent pool and skills pipeline.

That independence matters at a time when database licensing audits, forced upgrades and closed ecosystems frustrate CIOs. pgEdge leans into this principle; the company recently open-sourced all its end-user tooling under the PostgreSQL license — a permissive license with no lock-in and full source availability.

PostgreSQL already claims one of the largest developer communities in the world, with millions of Docker pulls and widely adopted tooling, such as pgAdmin. This isn’t niche open source; it’s mainstream enterprise tech with a massive talent pool and skills pipeline.

Skeptics reasonably ask whether open source increases operational burden. But the opposite is true, and open source extensions like pgEdge allow developers to maximize the usefulness of PostgreSQL for specific use cases, such as ensuring high availability, serving an edge network or deploying across multiple clouds and regions.

“pgEdge operationalizes Postgres for distributed use — no DIY scripts. CNPG [CloudNativePG] automates upgrades, backups and PITR [point-in-time recovery]. Kubernetes resource tuning improves hardware efficiency. Migration is incremental, not a forklift exercise,” Page said.

With automation and support maturity, the open source pathway’s total cost of ownership trends decisively beat proprietary database licensing models at enterprise scale, Page said.

Why Modern Applications Need Edge-Native Databases

Modern applications don’t live only in centralized data centers. They run at the edge, close to users, devices and events, to minimize latency and maintain responsiveness. Page said it plainly: Run your database where your app runs.

This makes it important to choose a solution like pgEdge with support for multimaster PostgreSQL across geographically distributed clusters. With these tools, “each region can read and write locally with extremely low latency, while asynchronous replication keeps data consistent across the global footprint. If a region goes offline, traffic can shift elsewhere; when it returns, it automatically resynchronizes and rejoins,” he explained.

Importantly, pgEdge doesn’t fork PostgreSQL, Page said.

“It builds on Postgres’ logical replication lineage and enhances it for multiregion, multiwrite production topologies, preserving compatibility and ecosystem consistency. The result is true edge-friendly Postgres for global, real-time applications — from retail and IoT [Internet of Things] to finance and connected healthcare,” he said.

Automating PostgreSQL With Kubernetes-Native Tools

Enterprise teams want database automation that matches their Kubernetes investment, which is where CNPG, a respected open source Postgres operator, comes in. With Helm charts and hardened images, pgEdge lets teams deploy Postgres on Kubernetes in single-node, primary and replica high-availability clusters, and full multimaster, multiregion distributed Postgres.

Each edge site can run its own Kubernetes cluster with a local Postgres node. CNPG handles backups, PITR, rolling updates and even major version upgrades, historically one of Postgres’ most complex tasks. “For platform teams, this feels like a control plane for Postgres, not scripts to watch over,” Page said.

This is where Postgres wins against proprietary databases with monolithic vendor consoles and professional services dependencies. Instead, you get operator-driven, cloud native life cycle automation aligned with GitOps and site reliability engineering (SRE) workflows.

Scaling Your Database Architecture as Your Business Grows

Few organizations begin with a multiregion architecture, but when business growth requires expansion, you want a smooth progression: Start with a single node or primary-replica; add additional regions as needed; and enable multimaster replication when ready. The same Postgres stack underpins each stage. No migration to proprietary clustering, architectural traps or throughput tax for expanding globally are necessary, Page said. This makes scaling up more straightforward for teams and less expensive for businesses.

Local read/write performance plus global data coherence is exactly what edge-native AI requires, especially when real-time context or local decision-making matters.

pgEdge provides two container builds: Minimal, consisting of core Postgres plus multimaster replication, and Full, which includes key extensions such as PostGIS and pgvector.

This pairing covers two rising enterprise requirements: geospatial intelligence (logistics, telecom, logistics, public sector) and AI-retrieval workflows via pgvector for embeddings. Running vectors and relational data in the same system eliminates operational overhead and avoids standing up additional proprietary AI databases.

High-Performance Postgres

AI inference increasingly runs at the edge for performance, privacy and cost. Page confirmed pgEdge has customers running AI apps and models alongside distributed Postgres. Local read/write performance plus global data coherence is exactly what edge-native AI requires, especially when real-time context or local decision-making matters.

This deployment pattern signals an emerging trend: AI stacks anchored by distributed Postgres rather than siloed vector engines or proprietary plug-ins.

Page said further AI-related enhancements are in development, noting that pgEdge’s strategy is to ship production-ready features, not hype-driven experiments.

pgEdge supports customers operating in private clouds, regulated virtual private cloud (VPC) environments and fully air-gapped deployments. Because its platform is open source, security teams can audit the code and operational components. Regulated industries no longer have to rely on vendors offering special “offline” editions because pgEdge works anywhere by design.

SQL Compatibility and a Large Talent Pool

PostgreSQL’s fidelity to SQL and ACID guarantees it is a major migration enabler. Teams can move workloads from Oracle and SAP with less friction than jumping to NoSQL or “new SQL” proprietary systems.

It’s also easy to hire for PostgreSQL. Page noted that while active contributors represent the community core, the user base is massive — spanning finance, telecom, Software as a Service (SaaS), manufacturing and public sector. That means enterprise staffing and long-term support stability.

In practice, pgEdge users are using the stack to standardize documentation across distributed systems; autogenerate tests with coverage targets; support iterative refactoring at edge sites; and power vector search next to OLTP workloads. Those are modern app realities: constant iteration, AI-driven features, distributed deployment footprints and operational consistency.

The Strategic Advantage of Distributed PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL plus pgEdge isn’t only an economic option. This is a strategic modernization path for enterprises that need multiregion, multimaster reliability; Kubernetes-native operations; AI-ready extensions such as pgvector; deployment anywhere (cloud, hybrid, edge or air-gapped); and freedom from vendor lock-in and punitive licensing, Page said.

For architects, it turns PostgreSQL into a globally distributed, cloud native control plane for data. For CFOs, it transforms the database cost curve. For developers, it preserves the toolchain and SQL model they know and trust, he said.
