We open the 2026/27 season with one of jazz’s most vital and respected voices. Widely regarded as the defining saxophonist of his generation, Joshua Redman returns to The Wallis with Words Fall Short, a new program that shifts away from the vocal collaborations of his previous album toward the expressive possibilities of instrumental storytelling. While the title may sound ironic, this is anything but a step backward. It is an organic next chapter: a set of previously unheard original compositions brought to life by a new quartet, featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo, with special guest Skylar Tang, a Bay Area-born trumpeter and composer whose lyrical depth and striking originality have quickly established her as one of the most compelling emerging voices in jazz today.

The Naghash Ensemble brings together the earthy spirituality of Armenian folk song, contemporary classical music, and post-minimalism with the driving energy of rock and jazz. Named after the medieval Armenian mystic poet and priest Mkrtich Naghash, the ensemble reimagines his sacred texts in a strikingly modern musical language. Three extraordinary female vocalists join Armenia’s finest instrumentalists on duduk, oud, dhol, and piano to create a sound described that is at once ancient and urgent – “part folk music, part classical, and profoundly moving. Unmistakably Armenian, but out of this world.” Written by Armenian-American composer John Hodian, Songs of Exile is a profound meditation on humanity’s relationship to the divine, told through the voice of a monk cast into a long separation from his homeland.

Step into Vivaldi’s Venice, one of history’s great cultural crossroads where European and Middle Eastern influences met and mingled. Francesco Corti leads from the harpsichord as LACO’s virtuoso players step forward in a series of mixed and double concertos. Highlights include the rarely heard reconstructed Organ and Violin Concerto, featuring Assistant Concertmaster Tereza Stanislav, as well as the fiery “Grosso Mughal,” one of Vivaldi’s most virtuosic violin concertos, performed by LACO Concertmaster Margaret Batjer. Violinist Rachel Barton Pine joins for two rare Viola d’amore concertos, performed on an instrument whose sympathetic strings create a haunting, resonant sound unlike anything else in the classical world. Works by fellow Venetians Albinoni and Galuppi complete the program, revealing the elegance, charm, and expressive breadth of 18th-century Venice.

He opens with Haydn‘s Symphony No. 44, “Trauer” (“Mourning”), a work of unusual weight for its time, whose solemn slow movement was, according to legend, requested for the composer’s own funeral. That spirit of introspection deepens in the Wallis debut of Kayhan Kalhor, performing Blue as the Turquoise Night of Neyshabur on the kamancheh (the traditional Persian spiked fiddle), drawing on centuries of Persian classical tradition to create music that feels both ancient and immediate. The program closes with Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, the “Linz,” famously composed in four days and brimming with energy, wit, and effortless grace — a radiant, joyful counterpoint to the depth that preceded it.
