Working with her mainstays Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jackson essentially reworks the hushed atmosphere of janet., without putting a new sonic spin on the material. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow TaxiをサンプリングしたR&B Classicとして名高いGot 'Til It's Goneを収録。1年後、この曲に参加しているQ-Tipが所属するA Tribe Called QuestのFind a Wayにもサンプリングされ、DJのMIX PLAYでは繋ぐのが鉄板となっていることでも有名。

彼女の内省的な側面にフォーカスを当てた『The Velvet Rope』。強いメッセージ性を打ち出しながらも、ポップ～R&B、ロック、ファンク、ヒップホップを昇華し、スタイリッシュでクールな彼女色に染め上げた手腕がさすがの一言。
ア・トライブ・コールド・クエストのQティップとジョニ・ミッチェルをフィーチャーした「Got 'Til It's Gone」は大名曲。

かっこいいジャネット作と言えば個人的にはこれ。
同性愛やDV、SMやら当時(まぁ今も)タブーなテーマをストレートに扱って物議を巻き起こしたわりに全米１位となったさすがな１枚。本人感が前面に出たジョニ・ミッチェルのサンプリングやロッド・スチュワートのカヴァーなどなども個性的で、ニュージャックからトリップホップまでの多様性をまとめあげる天性の可憐さが生み出す衝撃なまでのかっこよさ！
