Nigeria, Cameroon, Zambia: The African giants missing at 2026 World Cup
Some of the continent’s football heavyweights are watching from home as 10 countries represent the continent at the World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup has expanded Africa’s voice. But some of the continent’s heavyweights are watching from home. It’s a World Cup without Nigeria, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Zambia, among others.

Does the absence of some of these big names sting?

First, Nigeria. The Super Eagles have the talent, the hype and the fans who can fill any stadium. But they choked when it mattered. They’re now missing back-to-back World Cups. Remember, they were not in Qatar in 2022.

For a country that lives football, that’s a national wound. The likes of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, known for their ability to tear up defences, are nowhere to be found on the world stage. They lost the World Cup slot to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the CAF playoff final.

Some say Nigeria’s absence is a big loss for Africa’s brand at the World Cup. They are three-time AFCON champions, ranked 25th globally and 3rd in Africa.

No chance to roar

Another big name is Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions. Five AFCON titles. They finished second in their qualification group, behind Cabo Verde, who are now making their World Cup debut. Ranked 44th in the world and 7th in Africa, but the Lions have no chance to roar on the global stage. They are now spectators.

Then Zambia. The 2012 AFCON champions. There were high hopes. But the Chipolopolo faded fast, finishing behind Morocco in their qualification group. They now watch the 2026 World Cup from the couch.

Burkina Faso are also missing. The Stallions, 2013 AFCON runners-up and 2017 bronze medallists, are tough and resilient. They pushed right to the edge in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 21 points and 8 wins. They lost only one match.

Yet they couldn’t qualify because of math. CAF only takes the four best runners-up to the playoffs. Burkina Faso were not among them.

Neighbouring Mali also finished third in their group behind Ghana and Madagascar. The 1972 AFCON silver medallists are among Africa’s strongest teams. But in the qualifiers, the Eagles had too many draws. Now no World Cup show.

Despite the missing big names, analysts say Africa’s performance at the World Cup so far has been uplifting, with South Africa, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, Cabo Verde, Morocco, Senegal and DRC representing the continent.
