Big Good / Pokémon

Go To

Warning! Unmarked spoilers below.

As a multimedia Long Runner with very many installments, Pokémon has a lot of Big Goods. During each protagonist's goal in the main series to become the next Pokémon Champion, other veteran Champions and/or benefactors of each generation primarily serve as Big Goods, as they are the ones providing guidance and wisdom during the heroes' journey in each region. However, some of the benevolent Pokémon also fulfill the role due to their great power and might, and are quite vital in stopping the evil teams' plots. These heroes also exist in spin-offs and other media.

Video Games

    Main Games
  • Pokémon Red and Blue: Lance is a world-famous Dragon master, as well the leader of the Elite Four in Red, Blue, Yellow, and the Gen I remakes. He is also very helpful to the protagonist, and has passed the Dragon's Den test, which requires knowledge of proper Pokémon care.
  • Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire: Steven Stone is the son of the president of the Devon Corporation who is the Champion of the Hoenn League. He also serves as a mentor figure to the player character in the Hoenn games, giving them advice throughout their journey and assisting them when the region is in crisis.
  • Pokémon Diamond and Pearl:
    • Professor Rowan is the Pokémon Professor native to the Sinnoh region who specializes in the study of Pokémon evolution. He is also more inquisitive and won't hesitate to take literal punches, as shown when he's able to take on Galactic Grunts in Jubilife City to protect both the player and his assistant.
    • Cynthia serves the Big Good role in the plot of Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. She actually leaves most of the good stuff to the player, but is around to guide and help them repeatedly along the way.
  • Pokémon Black and White:
    • Alder serves the role as Champion of the Unova league, getting in the direct conflict with N. In Black2 and White 2, he become the mentor of the Player Character and Cheren, teaching them the basics of Pokémon battling.
    • Iris also fulfills the Big Good role. After showing Bianca around Castelia City and protecting her from the Team Plasma Grunts that stole her Munna, she trains Bianca up so that she can protect her own Pokémon.
  • Pokémon Sword and Shield: Leon is the region's longtime Champion and plays a primary role in keeping the Galar region safe and secure, such as stopping a rogue Dynamax Pokémon that appears near Hammerlocke. He later tries to talk Chairman Rose into at least postponing his grand plan until after the Championship finals, and when Rose goes through with it anyways he immediately goes to confront Rose and try to take down Eternatus. In the postgame it's revealed he's more or less the new Chairman of Macro Cosmos, having taken over leadership of several of their projects and turned the Rose Tower into the Battle Tower.
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus:
    • Kamado is the Commander who is responsible for the Galaxy Expedition Team and is implied to be the one responsible for the neutrality between the Diamond and Pearl clans. However, while he has genuinely good intentions, his paranoia and obsessive desire to protect Jubilife and its people leads to him taking some rather extreme actions, including having the player flat out exiled.
    • Mistress Cogita is a mysterious woman living in an ancient grove north of Lake Valor who takes Kamado's place as the player's mentor and Mission Control starting when you are exiled from Jubilife and offers you her aid up until the very end of the post-game content.
    • Arceus itself is a rare Pokémon example as it sends the player to the past to Hisui and instructs them to capture every Pokémon in the Hisui region.
  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Ms. Geeta both the chairwoman of Paldea's Pokémon League and its Top Champion, and a lot of Pokémon Trainers look up to her.
    Spin-off Games
  • Pokémon Ranger series
    • Pokémon Ranger: Prof. Hastings is the head researcher of the Ranger Union, who invented the Stylers that the Rangers use.
    • Shadows of Almia: Chairperson Erma is the top authority of the Ranger Union, as she runs everything.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
    • Gates to Infinity: Hydreigon is a Dragon/Dark Pokemon who took the initiative in saving the world by calling humans into it once he realized that no Pokémon could stand against the Bittercold.
  • Detective Pikachu: Mewtwo serves as the sole Big Good for both games, being the strongest Pokémon that is actively trying to go after those that are misusing his cells. As revealed fully in Returns, Mewtwo is also responsible for saving Harry's life by transferring his soul into the body of his Pikachu (with the Pikachu giving its consent) meaning Mewtwo is the reason why Detective Pikachu exists in the first place. Mewtwo also helps the heroes out in the end by holding off Merloch after he transfers his soul into a Deoxys.

Other Media

    Anime & Manga
  • Pokémon the Series:
    • The Original Series: Unown serves the role in a Season 5 episode. To thank Ash and friends, especially Larvitar, for helping and taking care of it, Unown protects them from Team Rocket and sends them to another dimension that helps them understand Larvitar better while allowing it to overcome much of its pain and fear.
    • Diamond and Pearl: Cynthia is portrayed this way, in regards to both heroics and the Pokémon League. She leads and supports the Power Trio in the final battle against Team Galactic, and is given extensive attention as the Champion of the Sinnoh League, while also playing a significant role in reshaping the Ash/Paul rivalry.
  • Pokémon Horizons: The Series: Professor Friede takes up the position as The Leader of the Rising Volt Tacklers. Among the group, he also seems to be the only elite trainer, which constantly puts him in the spotlight fending off the Explorers. Even when the kids get more competent in battling Friede is still clearly the strongest by a ginormous margin, and he's the only one who can actually fight Amethio, even holding the upper hand in most of their fights.
  • Pokémon Adventures: By Yellow, Red occupies the role as a master of Pokémon Battling, to the point that the Elite Four had to make sure he was out of the way before they could start their plans. Plus, many of the other Dex holders look up to him for guidance.
    Movies
  • Pokémon 2000: Slowking is the Pokémon who serves the Big Good position. He explains the crisis and sends the heroes on their mission while he watches over the main shrine.
  • Arceus and the Jewel of Life: Arceus responds to Ash and his friends' request for aid in stopping the remnants of Team Galactic from ripping the space-time wormhole to rescue Cyrus.
  • Zoroark: Master of Illusions: Celebi is the closest thing the movie has to the Big Good, being the Conflict Killer for other Pokémon and using its powers for other Pokémon's well being.
  • Genesect and the Legend Awakened: Mewtwo is a powerful Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution. It protects the wild Pokémon of Pokémon Hills and is able to empathize with the Genesect due to humans playing a key role in their current state.
  • Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction: Xerneas is the only Pokémon who is vital to stopping Yveltal's rampage by using its telepathy to calm it down and convince it to leave the forest.
  • Pokémon Detective Pikachu: Surprisingly, with a healthy dose of Adaptational Heroism, Mewtwo acts as the greatest source of good in the movie, as it rescues Harry and his Pikachu on different occasions, and pushes the direly-needed Reset Button in the aftermath of Howard's evil plan.
