Dead for a Dollar is a 2022 western written and directed by Walter Hill, starring Christoph Waltz, Willem Dafoe, Rachel Brosnahan, Warren Burke, Benjamin Bratt, and Hamish Linklater.
The film follows Max Bourland (Waltz), a Bounty Hunter who is hired by a businessman (Linklater) to retrieve his wife (Brosnahan) after she has been abducted.
It was released in the United States on September 30, 2022, by Quiver Distribution.
Dead for a Dollar provides examples of:
- Damsel in Distress: The plot is kicked off by Rachel being abducted and held for ransom. Subverted with the reveal that she actually chose to leave with Jones because she hates her husband.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Rachel gets her cheek scarred in a shoot-out. She says that she'll wear her scar as a badge of honor.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: The final line of the movie, said by Max after the final battle.
- Redemption Rejection: Borlund offers Cribbens the chance to leave town and start a new life. Cribbens refuses and Borlund kills him.
- Sore Loser: William "English Bill" Palmer, who is so convinced Cribbens cheated at poker that he holds him at gunpoint demanding his money back.
- Title Drop: Early in the film, as Borland tells Cribbens about his latest bounty kill, Cribbens responds "Just another fella dead for a dollar."
- "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: Text at the end details what the characters do after the events of the film: Poe serves in the army for thirty years and dies an old man in a veterans' home in 1937, Rachel joins the Suffragette Movement and never remarries, and Borlund spends the rest of his days as a bounty hunter.
