Tropes for the film:

  • Actor Allusion: Will gets a stuffed bear as a gift for Allison, similar to Cage's character doing the same thing in Con Air.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Vincent Kinsky had to have his leg amputated after Will shot him to prevent him from murdering the janitor during the original robbery.
  • Cardboard Pal: The FBI pull over Riley after she leaves the ferry, only to discover that the over figure in the cab of her truck is not Will, but actually the top half of a mannequin buckled into the seat; with Will having switched to another vehicle while on the ferry.
  • Evil Cripple: Big Bad Vincent Kinsky had his leg amputated after Will shot him in the leg. The infection he contracted from the leg wound destroyed his good looks, and he later cut off several fingers as part of his scheme to fake his death.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: Barring the prologue and epilogue, the film covers 12 hours. The Tagline is "12 hours. $10 million. 1 kidnapped daughter".
  • Fakin' MacGuffin: At the end of the film, Will, Riley, and Alison are enjoying an afternoon barbecue, watched by Harland from a distance because some of the bank gold is still missing. Will finds a chunk of the missing gold in Riley's truck and Will throws the gold into the bayou. Harland quits monitoring Will. Unbeknownst to Harland, Will threw away a decoy, not the nugget of gold.
  • Faking the Dead: Vincent faked his death by burning a body and cutting off a couple of his own fingers and planting them on the body so he could be identified by fingerprints and DNA.
  • Handicapped Badass: Big Bad Vincent Kinsky is missing a leg as a result of a wound he received from Will.
  • I Have Your Wife: A cell phone inside the package rings; the caller reveals himself to be Vincent, driver of the taxi, and demands the $10 million from the heist within 12 hours or he will kill Alison.
  • Inspector Javert: Having arrested Will following the original bank robbery, Agent Tim Harland is waiting for Will when he is released from prison eight years later. He refuses to believe that Will destroyed the money from the original robbery, and later that Vincent is still alive and has kidnapped Will's daughter Allison, and continues to hound Will.
  • It's Always Mardi Gras in New Orleans: Takes place in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday.
  • Man on Fire: Vincent pours gasoline over the cab and sets fire to it with Allison still locked in the trunk. During the subsequent fight with Will, he is knocked into the spilled gasoline and goes up in flames himself.
