Liberating Japan with cool mechas and sight-based psychic powers since 2006.

A multimedia franchise spawned from the 2006 Code Geass anime series. Created by Sunrise, the story is set in an Alternate History where Britain had a Henry IX instead of James I, kept America, but lost the British Isles to Napoléon Bonaparte. They fled to the American colonies and founded the Holy Britannian Empire, which expands to control over a third of the world. The main story focuses on Lelouch vi Britannia, an exiled prince of the empire who becomes the leader of a formidable rebel army fighting against the empire — and his own father, the emperor.

Apart from the usual trappings of a typical Real Robot story, political and social commentary included, Code Geass has two constant elements remaining dominant all throughout: the Knightmare Frames, bi-pedal combat mechas with extra wheels for advanced mobility; and the titular Geass, a term referring to the various psychic powers that can only be activated through eye contact.

Along with several canon spinoffs, Code Geass has produced an incredible amount of All There in the Manual content, which includes audio dramas, Picture Dramas and DVD-exclusive short stories that help flesh out the show's universe or expand on its characters. It has also garnered five Alternate Continuity manga and multiple games to date.

Works in this franchise:

Main Works:

  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006-2007): The original anime, focusing on Lelouch and his Well-Intentioned Extremist campaign against the Holy Britannian Empire as Revenge for the death of his mother as well as to change the world for his sister's sake. Spanned 25 episodes.
    • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (2008): The sequel to Lelouch of the Rebellion, taking place some time after the events of Akito the Exiled. The story focuses on Lelouch's attempt to finish his rebellion against the Holy Britannian Empire, setting up a chain of events that ultimately resulted with him usurping his father's position as emperor and orchestrating his Zero-Approval Gambit. Also spanned 25 episodes.
  • In addition to the main series, there are also three compilation films (2017-2018) that both condense and retold the story as well as add new scenes and make alterations to the story, making it officially an AU to the original anime: Initiation, Transgression and Glorification.
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection (February 2019): A film continuation of the re-released compilation film trilogy, detailing the aftermath and consequences of the Zero Requiem as well as C.C.'s quest to resurrect Lelouch, who takes up the mantle of Zero and leads the Black Knights (now backed by the Principality of Britannia) for the final time to rescue Nunnally from Zilkhstan's captivity.
  • Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture (May - August 2024): Set seven years after Lelouch of the Re;surrection, the story follows two mercenary brothers, Ash and Rozé, as they attempt to rescue Princess Sakuya Sumeragi from the clutches of the Neo Britannian Empire who have walled off Hokkaido from the rest of the world. Rozé of the Recapture was released as a four-part movie series in Japanese theaters from May through August, while it streamed as a 12-episode series worldwide exclusively on Disney+ on June 21.
  • Code Geass Aspar The Star Chaser (TBA)

Canonical Spin-Offs and Side Stories:

Non-Canonical Works:

Games

  • Code Geass: Lost Colors (2008): A non-canon spin off Visual Novel with the main character called Rai who has lost his memories and has ended up at Ashford Academy. Now Rai must decide how he goes about regaining his memories.
  • Code Geass: Maelstrom of Libra: A mobile game starring a young girl named Laila who escapes from a research facility in the desert.
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (2007): A non-canon RPG on the Nintendo DS. It roughly follows the plot of the original anime, with changes across the storyline. It introduces the rui Britannia twins, Pollux and Castor, as the main antagonists.
  • Code Geass: Genesic Re;Code (Spring 2021), a mobile phone game that is billed a "true sequel" to Lelouch of the Rebellion that will tie-up certain loose ends from Akito the Exiled and contain a brand new story featuring characters from all previous canon works. It will star three new protagonists: Al, Gigi and Archive.
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Lost Stories (Spring 2022 for Japan, September 2023 for Global), another mobile game. It seems to follow the first season of Code Geass, but with the inclusion of a new character (a mixed-race Ashford student of player-chosen gender), their guardian, and a mysterious female knight.
